This latest wave of spam here on Mastodon is seriously getting to be very frustrating to say the least.

I woke up and took a look at Mastodon about 45 minutes ago and I had to start my day by reporting 19 spam posts.

It's the same spam that's been going around for a week or so now that mass mentions people.

Wow … the latest #MastoUpdate introduced a number of really annoying bugs. Not to speak of the hideous interface changes …

- Toots with filtered words (set to be ~completely~ hidden as if they don't exist) are still displayed in my notifications as '@ mention' if they contain a mention. Especially with the current #MastoSPAM wave, that's a bad decision.
- Unsolicited private mentions (set to be ~completely~ ignored and sent to the void) are still displayed in 'Filtered notifications'.

According to my notifications, I am very popular in Japan.

This latest wave of spam here on Mastodon has been pretty bad over the last 2 - 3 days.

I think I've personally reported close to 50 accounts so far and I'm still getting them as we speak.

I've suspended 17 instances, as my attempt to survive the #mastospam wave we are getting. Hopefully I will be able to remove these blocks in a few days/weeks.

@jwildeboer I believe the combination of web of trust with smaller instances is probably the most effective approach.

Moderation does not scale well, not even when automated (ask commercial social networks).

Web of trust is effective on smaller networks only (I mean when each node vouches for a small group of people they know well, like in real life).

I believe that was ultimately the whole point of being descentralised after all.

I can believe that a bit larger cooperative commons model could work, where there is a community of users and a democratic governance model, which ultimately implies that the people in the instance really know each other.

I have my doubts about the super-large instances ran as an enterprise. They may not be the origin of the spam (like in the last few days), but they were the medium of propagation. 🤔

I am curious about the lessons learned over the last few days.

I thought the #spam had stopped, but no.....

I have no tools in my fedi-toolbox to stop this. I can block as messages come in, but new compromised instances keep coming.

For me, it's all coming from small mastodon instances that people have abandoned or take no care in administering.

2. This seems to be a good way to try and delegitimize a platform that is starting to be a threat to the "business model" of some other, specific, platforms. Just saying. #mastoSpam

Whoop whoop I just got my first spam on mastodon! For me, that's a sign of a broader audience... small networks tend to be unattractive to spammers and apparently the critical threshold has been trespassed for the #Fediverse.
