I suspect a spambot when I get a new follow where it looks like I've had no previous interaction with them (replying, liking, or retooting, in either direction). It's more suspicious when their bio is blank and they haven't made any toots.

Anyone with good advice against spam registrations in a message board? Every other month, I set a new captcha question ("Name the capital letters in the following string: ..."), but I then get new spam bot registrations after a few months. I need to set a new question/string, which gets really tiring... Is there something which lasts a bit longer?
Only thing that got better with AI are spambots, I tell you.

In the last 2 days I've noticed a high number of #spambots infiltrating the #Fediverse, most of which originating from mastodon.social. Just an observation which might serve as an alert to any real person on that instance that this phenomenon is likely to result in the entire instance getting blocked, that you might do better changing to a different instance.

Reminder to be careful about #donations you give out to people on here: there are a few known #SpamBots which represent fake organizations, trying to get people to #donate to them, and I periodically see posts from those getting boosted by well-meaning people.

If someone purports to be from an organization, there will be evidence, such as a green checkmark in their profile, or their links going to the URL of a known organization that you can look up. Never donate to a group when you don't know exactly what they do. Best case, it's not going to anyone effective, worst case, it's going to their enemies.

The particular #SpamBot that prompted this is posting on #MutualAid tags about #LGBTQ #Refugees in #Kenya. It is using AI generated imagery and doesn't even try to name an organization, and is linking #donation links in posts which I see trending.

Please be careful about who you donate money to!

Glancing at the timeline in the middle of the night, I am noticing accounts pop up, send the message...
"Hello #Mastodon"
...then posting ads with no context, sometimes also using that message to get it on the hashtag.

General users, please report these if you see these #SpamBots, and #Moderation, be on the lookout.

Edit:
I have not seen them again today, so either this was just a one-off thing where someone made three accounts to do that, or a test of some system, or maybe someone else already got to all of them before I could see them. Either way, I guess this wasn't as much of a thing as it seemed last night, but let's keep an eye out in case this is a new pattern.

Back in January FediDB reported 1.5 MILLION new sign ups (13.5%) in December for Mastodon. It was a whole thing. People celebrated.

I found it odd as the monthly active user metic only increased 0.2%.

That surge is now missing from the totals and from December?

February 18th shows 10 million total users. The chart suggests that the December spike never happened.

Did we dream it? Where'd those users go?

I have taken the option of vetting all follow requests. Too many bad experiences from fake accounts on Instagram, I guess. It's been useful here. Some obvious bots. But I HATE it when there's a newish account that you can't TELL for certain if it's a legit noob or a bot. Had one sitting untouched in my notification for about a week now. Pretty sure that it's a bit, but not TOTALLY certain, so they exist in nondeterministic limbo.

Tackling #spam is easier than you might think on fedi.

There's tools that exist that actively mark all #spambots with either User Absent (UA) or bright blue and yellow markings that mimic the #TitanTriggerfish or Blue-Ringed #Octopus.

Лоооол: мне сегодня, кажись, позвонил вот теперь точно чат-бот-спамер! (с симуляцией голоса!)

Как я это понял:
- позвонил скрытый номер
- в начале бот рассказал свою инфу
- как-то реагировал на ответы
- а затем спросил "Пользуетесь ли вы кредитными картами?", я ответил "Нет, только дебетовыми", чего он явно не ожидал (но что-то тоже промурчал довольно длинное)
- потом он мне задал ещё какой-то вопрос
- а затем, видать, длина контекста закончилась, и он снова спросил "Пользуетесь ли вы кредитными картами?", как будто ничего не бывало
- эпоха ИИ скама и спама воистину началась
