The Seychelles mealybug (Icerya seychellarum) got its name because it was first spotted in a shipment of wood from there. It’s a pest made up almost entirely of females that reproduce through parthenogenesis. It secretes honeydew, which ants love to feed on.

This Heliophanus tribolosus, watching over its territory from a blue jasmine, is a tiny jumping spider barely 3 or 4 mm long.

Esta es una de mis fotos favoritas, hecha con un iPhone 13 mini y una lente casera para enfocar de cerca. Por eso hay tan poca profundidad de campo. Os aseguro que la foto no está editada. Esta Heliophanus tribolosus que vigila su territorio desde un jazmín azul es una pequeña araña saltarina de apenas 3 ó 4 mm.

The photo didn't look bad, but this time I took too many risks. The wasps didn't like it when I brought the iPhone within a few centimeters. For a few very long minutes I remained completely still surrounded by wasps flying around. None of them stung me.

La foto no ha quedado mal, pero esta vez he arriesgado demasiado. A las avispas no les ha gustado nada que acercara el iPhone a pocos centímetros. Durante unos larguísimos minutos he permanecido completamente inmóvil rodeado de avispas volando alrededor. No me ha picado ninguna.

Das Foto ist gar nicht schlecht geworden, aber diesmal bin ich ein bisschen zu weit gegangen. Die Wespen waren überhaupt nicht begeistert, dass ich das iPhone nur wenige Zentimeter entfernt gehalten habe. Minutenlang stand ich völlig regungslos da, umgeben von herumschwirrenden Wespen. Keine hat mich gestochen.

Selenicereus grandiflorus cáctus

A single night in the whole year is how long this flower of the cactus Selenicereus grandiflorus lasts. Although it is native to Central America, the photos are taken in my garden, in Spain, on the night when the flower opens (June 21) and the following morning. Its name Selenicereus derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon and from cereus (candle), in reference to its nocturnal flowering.

Una única noche en todo el año es lo que dura esta flor del cáctus Selenicereus grandiflorus. Aunque es originario de Centroamérica las fotos están hechas en mi jardín, en España, en la noche en que se abre la flor (21 de junio) y a la mañana siguiente. Su nombre Selenicereus deriva de Selene, la diosa griega de la Luna y de cereus (vela), en referencia a su floración nocturna.

Eine einzige Nacht im ganzen Jahr ist das, was diese Blume des Kaktus Selenicereus grandiflorus hält. Obwohl er ursprünglich aus Mittelamerika stammt, wurden die Fotos in meinem Garten in Spanien in der Nacht aufgenommen, in der sich die Blume öffnet (21. Juni) und am nächsten Morgen. Sein Name Selenicereus leitet sich von Selene, der griechischen Mondgöttin, und cereus (Kerze) ab, in Anlehnung an seine nächtliche Blüte.
