Cyclosa conica is a tiny spider, just 5 mm long, and there are about half a dozen species of it in Spain alone. You can easily spot them by the way they line up their legs forward and arrange the remains of their prey and other debris in a neat vertical line right in the center of their web.

Cyclosa conica, es una pequeña araña de 5 mm de la que sólo en España hay media docena de especies. Se reconocen fácilmente por la forma en que alinean las patas hacia delante y por cómo distribuyen en fila vertical los cadáveres de presas y otros desechos en el centro de la telaraña.

Cyclosa conica ist eine winzige Spinne von nur 5 mm, und in Spanien gibt es etwa ein halbes Dutzend Arten davon. Man erkennt sie leicht daran, wie sie ihre Beine nach vorne ausrichtet und die Überreste ihrer Beute sowie anderen Kram in einer vertikalen Linie mitten im Netz stapelt.

Like a tightrope walker, this spider walks on the threads of its web. I think it is a small male Araneus diadematus. End of May in the province of Alicante, Spain.

Mangora acalypha is a tiny spider that is usually placed in the center of the web, but if it feels in danger it may hide in adjacent vegetation. Its webs are not very large, but usually contain more than 60 spokes.

La oruga de la polilla Acronicta tridens tiene unos colores muy llamativos. Es muy curiosa la protuberancia negra cuya función ignoro.

It is difficult to approach the spider Cyrtophora citricola without touching its thick, almost spherical web. If startled, it makes it vibrate as if jumping on a trampoline and then retracts its legs to make a little ball.

Es difícil acercarse a la araña Cyrtophora citricola sin tocar su espesa telaraña casi esférica. Si se asusta la hace vibrar como si saltara sobre una cama elástica y luego repliega las patas para hacerse una pelotita.

Es ist schwierig, sich der Spinne Cyrtophora citricola zu nähern, ohne ihr dickes, fast kugelförmiges Netz zu berühren. Wenn sie erschreckt wird, lässt sie es vibrieren, als ob sie auf einem Trampolin springen würde, und klappt dann ihre Beine zu einem kleinen Ball zusammen.

The largest butterfly in Europe.
The adults of the strawberry tree butterfly, Charaxes jasius, usually feed on the juices of ripe fruits. Maybe that's why it has landed on a branch of the fig tree in my garden (Photo taken in September, Alicante province).

Los adultos de la mariposa del madroño, Charaxes jasius se alimentan generalmente de los jugos de frutas maduras. Tal vez por eso se ha posado en una rama de la higuera de mi jardín.

Der größte Schmetterling Europas.
Die erwachsenen Tiere des Erdbeerbaumfalters, Charaxes jasius, ernähren sich normalerweise von den Säften reifer Früchte. Vielleicht ist er deshalb auf einem Zweig des Feigenbaums in meinem Garten gelandet.

Estas arañas sobreviven horas en el fondo de una piscina.
Si las rescatas y las dejas al sol reviven y se recuperan… a veces para volver a caer al agua.

Diese Spinnen überleben stundenlang auf dem Grund eines Schwimmbeckens.
Wenn man sie rettet und in die Sonne legt, werden sie wieder lebendig und erholen sich... und manchmal fallen sie wieder ins Wasser.

Seeing the small Cyrtophora citricola in this posture is rare. It is usually seen with its legs folded and curled into a ball to go unnoticed among the garbage trapped in its chaotic web. Getting the lens close without touching the web is tricky. What you see at the top of the photo are not prey wrapped in silk, but egg cocoons. Photo taken in Valencia, in september.

Ver a la pequeña Cyrtophora citrícola en esta postura es poco frecuente. Lo habitual es verla con sus patas plegadas y haciéndose una bola para pasar desapercibida entre la basura que queda atrapada en su caótica telaraña. Conseguir acercar la lente sin tocar la telaraña es complicado. Lo que se ve en la parte superior de la foto no son presas envueltas en seda, sino capullos de huevos. Foto tomada en Valencia, en septiembre.

Die kleine Cyrtophora citricola ist nur selten in dieser Haltung zu sehen. Normalerweise sieht man sie mit gefalteten Beinen und zu einem Ball zusammengerollt, um unbemerkt zwischen dem in ihrem chaotischen Netz gefangenen Müll zu verschwinden. Es ist schwierig, das Objektiv nah heranzubringen, ohne das Netz zu berühren. Was Sie oben auf dem Foto sehen, sind keine in Seide eingewickelten Beutetiere, sondern Eierkokons. Das Foto wurde in Valencia im September aufgenommen.

A esta Macrothele calpeiana (araña negra o araña toro) no le ha hecho ninguna gracia que haya regado los arboles del jardín y haya mojado su cubículo. Adopta una actitud de defensa muy característica cuando acerco el smartphone para tomar la foto.

Die Macrothele calpeiana (Andalusische Trichternetzspinne) ist gar nicht erfreut darüber, dass ich die Bäume im Garten gegossen und sie und ihre Behausung durchnässt habe. Sie nimmt eine sehr charakteristische Abwehrhaltung ein, als ich mein Smartphone in die Nähe bringe, um ein Foto zu machen.

Es por esto conocida como araña alineadora de deshechos.

Cyclosa (Cyclosa conica, Konische Kreisspinne ,glaube ich) ist eine kleine 5 mm große Spinne, von der es allein in Spanien ein halbes Dutzend Arten gibt. Man erkennt sie leicht daran, dass sie ihre Beine nach vorne ausrichtet und Beutekadaver und andere Trümmer in einer Reihe nahe der Netzmitte verteilt. Aus diesem Grund werden Spinnen dieser Gattung im Englischen oft auch trash line spider gennant.

The Macrothele calpeiana (Gibraltar funnel-web spider o Spanish funnel-web spider) inhabits the south of the Iberian Peninsula and is the largest spider in Europe, being the only European arachnid protected by international treaties (Bern Convention and Council Directive).
Curiously, its name "calpeiana" refers to the place where it was discovered, Mount Calpe, now known as the Rock of Gibraltar, but I have photographed it in the fields of the other Calpe, that of the Rock of Ifach or north for the Arabs (province of Alicante).

La Macrothele calpeiana (araña negra o araña toro) habita el sur de la península ibérica y es la araña de mayor tamaño de Europa , siendo único arácnido europeo protegido por los tratados internacionales (Convenio de Berna y Directiva Hábitats).
Curiosamente, su nombre "calpeiana" hace referencia al lugar donde se descubrió, el monte Calpe, ahora conocido como Peñón de Gibraltar, pero ésta la he fotografiado en los campos del otro Calpe, el del peñón de Ifach o del norte para los árabes (provincia de Alicante).

Die Macrothele calpeiana (Andalusische Trichternetzspinne) ist im Süden der Iberischen Halbinsel beheimatet. Sie ist die größte Spinne Europas und das einzige europäische Spinnentier, das durch internationale Verträge (Berner Konvention und Habitat-Richtlinie) geschützt ist.
Seltsamerweise bezieht sich ihr Name "calpeiana" auf den Ort, an dem sie entdeckt wurde, den Berg Calpe, der heute als Felsen von Gibraltar bekannt ist, aber ich habe sie auf den Feldern des anderen Calpe fotografiert, dem des Felsens von Ifach oder des Nordens für die Araber (Provinz Alicante).

Hasta hoy creía que era yo el que producía las sacudidas de la espesa telaraña de Cyrtophora citricola al tocarla con el smartphone sin suficiente cuidado… hasta que he ralentizado el video y veo que es la propia araña la que crea la vibración como si saltara sobre una cama elástica. Curioso comportamiento.

Bis heute dachte ich, dass ich es bin, der das Schütteln des dicken Cyrtophora citricola Netzes verursacht, wenn ich es mit meinem Smartphone unvorsichtig berühre... bis ich das Video verlangsamte und sah, dass es die Spinne selbst ist, die die Vibration erzeugt, als würde sie auf einem Trampolin springen. Seltsames Verhalten.
