“The Fitzgerald had two lifeboats, number 1&2. One was recovered 12 miles from the wreck site washed ashore in Ontario, complete but badly damaged. The other was torn completely in half and spotted floating by the Arthur M. Anderson the day after the sinking on November 11th.” - Kristin Gall

  8. Among the fascinating (to me, anyway) items when I toured the Great Lakes freighter William A. Irvin in Duluth Thursday was the woodwork for the staircase in the pilot house. In addition to the captain’s quarters are four guest rooms and a guest lounge; VIPs and celebrities were known to go on mini-cruises as the ship sailed the Great Lakes and did so on other ships as well. The whole thing just … kicked ass.

  9. When our cool stores are full, and the destination buyers are not ready for them, our ships full of kiwifruit take an intentionally slow slow boat ride to China. They use them for cold storage for weeks at sea (they're owned by the Kiwifruit company, Zespri). Not much fun for the crew I suppose.

  10. Former Great Lakes fleetmates; apparently,
I missed the party on the Irvin last night here in Duluth as the John G. Munson arrived yesterday with limestone while museum ship William A. Irvin prepared to host a Thursday evening music concert on its deck, 6 August, 2026. Photo by David Schauer, who had to have his drone operating. Or actually had someone else get this one for him.

  11. Also at the Duluth canal park to steal my thunder was photog David Schauer, one of those guys who has the ability to and literally does hang out to get some really good shots; the Walter J. McCarthy arrived to load ore at Canadian National and close behind was the John G. Munson to fuel before unloading limestone, 6 August, 2026. Photo by David Schauer.

  12. I have been wanting to get back up to Duluth for awhile and damn if today wasn’t the day; early evening back-to-back arrivals of the American Steamship Company’s “footer” (1,000 foot) Walter J. McCarthy and the Great Lakes Fleet’s John G. Munson, 6 August, 2026. Photos by … yours truly. I think the camera in my smartphone phone did alright but I sure wish the Nikon wasn’t waiting on parts. I think I’ll skip the 0400 arrival of the James L. Oberstar.😜

  20. Being overtaken.

MV Orca, a 16m-ish sturdy catamaran coming past us. She's a windfarm support boat and I think was orginally designed for the St Kilda ferry route, so good for some rough seas.
