#RockportME - 2nd Annual SEED FEST
April 11 @ 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM
"The #RockportPublicLibrary will host its second annual SEED FEST on Saturday, April 11. This free, family-friendly event will take place on the upper and lower levels of the library. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., visitors can browse educational exhibits and activities covering #SeedStarting, #pollinators, #SoilHealth, #Composting, #NativePlants, #HeirloomVegetables, growing #rice and #grains in #Maine, #Wabanaki #FoodSovereignty, and much more!
"At 12:30 p.m., Petra Page-Mann of #FruitionSeeds will deliver an interactive keynote presentation. Page-Mann and her nonprofit seed company are strong advocates of 'gift culture,' which involves giving away seeds to promote food cultivation and community building. This ethos aligns perfectly with the theme of SEED FEST.
"The event is generously sponsored by the Rockport Library Foundation and is organized in partnership with several organizations, listed alphabetically: Herbal Hummingbird Hub, Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers, Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District, Maine Grains and Maine Grain Alliance, Maine Heirloom Seed Network, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association [#MOFGA], #MaineRiceProject at Ararat Farms, #MerryspringNatureCenter, #Niweskok: From the Stars to Seeds, Roots n Shoots, #UMaineCooperativeExtension, and #WildSeedProject.
"The exhibiting partners will provide valuable information, hands-on activities, items for sale, and an abundance of free seeds and seedlings. Additionally, #midcoast artist Katharine Cartwright’s beautiful #BotanicalPaintings will be showcased in the library’s lower level for a month-long exhibition titled 'In My Garden.' "

#BrunswickME - Late Season #SeedSowing at Woodward Point
Friday, March 27, 2026
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM#WoodwardPointPreserve
219 Woodward Point Road
Brunswick, ME"March is late in the season?! For native plants it is! Most native plant seeds require a long time in the cold and snow of winter in order to germinate. But, there are a few species that don’t require this, and fortunately they’re all easy ones for beginning growers. Come join us for the last seed sowing workshop of the year!
We will guide a hands-on exploration of the many steps of growing #NativePlants from seed, and establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants. We will also learn about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique #SeedCollection and seed sowing processes.
Participants will practice winter seed sowing themselves, leaving one pot for the new #CommunitySeedGarden at Woodward Point Preserve, and take one pot to build #habitat at home.
Notes on access: This workshop will be held in an unheated barn. If the weather is sunny, we will start the workshop outdoors. To come prepared, dress warmly but in layers. The parking lot includes space for 18 vehicles and 4 additional handicap accessible spots. Please park nose in, snugly as reasonable, to best accommodate the full number of participants. The barn is located directly adjacent to the parking lot. No bathrooms are available on site. Please let us know if there are ways we can help get you to the event!
Tickets
Our sliding scale registration is offered to make this event as accessible as possible while covering the costs of time, seeds, soil and pots. The recommended level is $25 for non-members, and $20 for members. Paying above provides generous support to others to attend, and contributing at lower levels is welcome if cost is a barrier to attendance. Thank you, we look forward to seeing you there!"

The second batch of seeds (sown last week) is starting to show some results! Basil (in the rectangular container) and squash are coming out ☺️
No cucumbers yet, though 😞 (the seeds are around 6 years old, so nothing might come out of them in the end).

Sweet and Hot peppers, and a tray of Maximilian Sunflowers. Also some Shrubby St. John's wort that sprouted after spending a week alternating in the freezer and refrigerator with the sunflower seeds. Peppers were just thinned by the clippers...

Next to come out is one of the leeks ☺️ Alliums are really going for it, aren't they? Maybe I should try garlic, too.

Here are some different recipes for #PeatFree #PottingSoil blends -- depending on what one needs it for (#SeedStarting, #RaisedBeds, #PottedPlants, etc). The recipes also call for the use of #mycorrhizae to simulate root production. My cannabis farmer friends use that in their soil blends!
How to Make Peat-Free #PottingMix
Easy #DIY Potting Mixes for Potted Plants and Mo"Going peat-free is one of the most impactful things we can do as gardeners to be better stewards of the earth and our resources. The lack of peat-free potting mixes at the garden center can be discouraging, but I see it as an opportunity to make my own which, frankly, has yielded far better results over the last few years. With a few basic components kept at hand, you can make great mixes for your plants, too!"

DIY #PottingMix Masterclass: Make Your Own #PeatFree Blends For Plants
Looking to make more of natural potting mix ingredients and boost your peat-free options? Our DIY potting mix masterclass can help you create potting mediums for different plants
By Mary Ellen Ellis
published September 9, 2024"While it’s easy to find high-quality potting mix at gardening stores and nurseries, there are good reasons to consider #DIY #PottingMix. Making your own blend gives you greater control and allows you to make adjustments for different needs. You can also save money this way.
"As you investigate recipes for the perfect potting mix, consider the importance of leaving out peat. Peat moss is often used in potting blends but unfortunately it must be harvested from wetlands. The process damages a delicate ecosystem and releases carbon dioxide. Luckily, if you want to make soilless growing mediums, there are plenty of good alternatives. Here we show you how to make your own potting mix."

I hadn't considered using #RiceHulls in a #PottingSoil mix. But I am definitely going to incorporate that into a #PeatFree mix, along with #CoconutCoir, #Perlite or #Vermiculite, and aged #Compost!

One of the planters I've brought in for the winter. At the beginning of spring, there was a tub of previously-used potting soil that had a couple sprouts boosting out early. We enjoyed some early spinach, and then I let it go to seed, to see if I could grow another round. These were planted late summer and have been going since.

Crafting the Perfect [#PeatFree] Starting Mix for Seeds & Planting Success
"Seed Starting Mix Ingredients
- #CocoCoir - Coconut husk fiber is the main growing medium in this recipe. Pro-Tip: When purchasing coco coir, pay attention to the product's grade (or coarseness) and salt content. You do not want chipped shells or particulates in it. I recommend ultra-fine premium grade A compressed coco coir blocks that are already triple-washed to remove salt.
- Vermiculite - Vermiculite is critical in your seed starting mix. It is an expanded volcanic rock that is very porous, allowing it to hold onto water and nutrients so they don’t drain through the soil.
- Perlite - Perlite is an expanded volcanic glass used in high-quality seed starting mixes to prevent compaction and allow better drainage. There are different grades of perlite. I prefer using fine to medium perlite. Extra-fine will work, too, but you will need to add more of it.
- Water - Warm water works best and speeds up the process, but you can also use cold water if that is all you have available.
- Fertilizer - Most seed starting mixes do not contain fertilizer. Since we are making our own, we can add it right into the seed starting mix. Choose a well-balanced, slow-release fertilizer, such as Trifecta+ and/or a gentle fertilizer like worm castings." [I plan on using worm castings.]

So, I think I'll save the #Degrowth articles for another time. It seems folks aren't into #SolarPunkSunday today (and that's fine), and more interested in politics and fascism. Tune in next Sunday -- I'll be posting about #SeedStarting and #Gardening because it's getting to be the time for that here in the Northern Hemisphere, and #HarvestTime in the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks to everyone who boosted my posts and made suggestions.

Attempting to grow native grasses. I heard that grasses get better germination rates when sown outdoors in late March. Testing that theory since I sowed some Little Bluestem much earlier.
Sowing seeds in little greenhouses, as well as in pots.
Species:
-Little Bluestem (two spinach containers taped together)
-Bottlebrush Grass (juice bottle)
-Sideoats Grama (in one or two pots with plastic mesh)
