I finished my gardening tasks just before raindrops came. Got most of my thinning done. Got all the cucumbers & cantaloupe seedlings repotted. Transplanted more salad greens & peas.

Added my perlite/vermiculite mixture & mixed it deep into soil in pots before transplanting/repotting. I scattered some over my soil remediation areas too.

Time to rest a bit before dinner.

So yeah, #CoarseSand can be used instead of #Perlite and #Vermiculite (and I would sterilize it before using it).

However, I did read that coarse sand can be too sharp for some root systems? It's something to consider...

"Coarse, sharp, or builder sand, often used in construction, is a primary ingredient in potting media. Like peat moss, sand improves drainage and aeration but does not improve water-holding capacity. Too much sand will make containers too heavy to move. Sand should not be mixed with clay-based soil."

So, like #Perlite takes a lot of energy to produce, while #Vermiculite is mined! Not sure if there are alternatives to either of those out there. Maybe sterilized #CoarseSand? Hmmmm... Something to ponder...

I hadn't considered using #RiceHulls in a #PottingSoil mix. But I am definitely going to incorporate that into a #PeatFree mix, along with #CoconutCoir, #Perlite or #Vermiculite, and aged #Compost!

Not much of a picture unless you like looking at fine graded vermiculite.

But I got my seeds for this year. Sowed some royal burgandy bush beans, shishito and habanero peppers, chocolate stripe tomatoes, cauliflower, and pak choy.

Direct sowing carrots, spinach and broccoli this weekend.

It's my lucky day.

Received my 100L mix of #perlites and #vermiculite I bought from a guy online for 20 euros.

I feel silly because it's another large item I have to move.

I know I'm crazy, but couldn't say no.

Tried to go to sleep early, and instead ended up waking up at 2AM.

Decided to do some quiet garden work so I picked up the failed attempt to grow #garlic hydroponically.

It grew pretty good as long as just the roots were in water, but when I planted the bulbs in #vermiculite and placed them on one of the holes of #IKEA #Växer, they stopped growing after a while and the stems turned dryand rotten.

I am going to plant these in soil outside to see if I get them to grow leaves again.

One of my #Jalapeno peppers is about 90cm tall.

Remember it was full of #aphids and was afraid it would die.
Cleaned it up and trimmed it to the bare minimum and been feeding it organic #fertilizer and 1L of water every day.

It is full of #flowers and already picked about 20 peppers from if. It is my most successful plant in a long time. Specially since it got a new pot filled with old soil mixed with #vermiculite and compost.
