A former #NASA official says unidentified anomalous phenomena, or #UAP - the things better known as #UFOs - could be officially added to the space agency's research portfolio using the same strategy that he used to add the search for #technosignatures (including #SETI). This was one of the fascinating sessions at the #SciWri23 meeting in Colorado. https://www.universetoday.com/163581/nasa-next-ufo-uap-research/ #Space #Aliens

Interesting that @MichaelEMann warns of "backfire effect" in combating #climatechange mis- and disinformation in his #sciwri23 talk.
The literature on this has changed a lot in recent years and if the effect is real at all it is likely much smaller than thought. Important to communicate this.
For those interested, this is a good recent paper on what may be the issue in research on the "backfire effect" and why scientists have struggled to replicate it

It's #Newstodon Friday!
Our Editor-in-Chief @alexip718 is en route to Boulder, Colorado for #SciWri23. Come say hi, and ask him anything about our newsroom, the Uproot Project, or the MIT Graduate Program in Science Writing!

The most common question I'm hearing before #SciWri23 is about what to wear. Folks vary, but people generally agree on business casual, and some are saying Boulder is perfect for mountain chic fashion. One thing I learned at the #SciWri23 virtual plenary on AI & science writing: The U.S. Copyright office has an open comment period until October 30 about copyright issues related to AI.
