  1. One of my favorite birds, so I kept the high ISO photo

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on December 23, 2024

Some of the camera settings I used to make this photo are at: rsok.com/~jrm/2025Jan15_birds_

  2. A proud #sapsucker clinging to a mountain ash in our front yard. The tree has about a 60% chance of dying, which is a bummer because a ton of birds eat the fruits, but on the other hand the 'sap wells' from this lil guy also feed hummingbirds and many others, same for the insects that the sap attracts, more #birb food. I'll just plant a fruit tree in the same spot... #pnw #fallcolors #birds #birding

  3. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) waiting for me to refill birdbath in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on January 14, 2024

  5. Avoiding spoilers, but here to report that in #Echo the #YellowBelliedSapsucker has #zygodactyl toes, gives #sapsucker calls, and does #sapsucker drumming cadence. Well done! No, it shouldn't be anywhere near #Choctaw lands during the growing season, but that's okay.

  6. Juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker on Sunday at Lido. These woodpeckers have evolved to rely on tree sap -- for which they drill wells in hardwood trees -- for a major part of their diet. They also eat insects captured under the bark or even in flight.

  7. Spring is slow to arrive in Maine but here is a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker to ease the wait. I can hear it pounding away at various places around the property, especially the telephone pole. Seems to love that spot. Here it's on another favorite head banging spot, a garden fence post. It was unconcerned with my presence as I was moving firewood close by, perhaps 15 feet (4.6 meters).

  8. If there is anything else in nature as deeply, thrillingly scarlet as the head of a red-breasted #sapsucker, then I’m also happy about that :) Feathers the color of joy!

  9. Knocking Seven Bells

Territorial behaviour of Sapsuckers in spring. Our garden this morning is caught between two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers raising a racket by knocking seven bells out of metal downpipes on neighbours' houses. It is quite remarkable the volume they can create as they compete back and forth. Please follow this link ...

  11. One of the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers came back around noon to visit the garden pond. A couple of days ago there were two together - fresh back from the south at the leading edge of Spring migration.
