  1. #Helene is a Cat3 storm in the #SaffirSimpson scale. It may soon incur into Cat4.

The eye has completely formed, enclosed, and nearly geometrically perfect That is a key identifying sign of strongest cyclones.

Helene is delivering coastal surges compatible with Cat5 cyclones.

The major hazard from the storm seems to be the combo of coastal surges and flash flooding.

  3. We are arriving at our destination?

It's hard to argue against this. What happens to a seething stew when we turn up the hob? It becomes more energetic, kinetic. Energy is conserved, after all.

    "Stays the same" is implausible.
    "Calms down" is implausible.

[So pray for upper level wind shear deus ex machina. With projected stilling as well? Hmm.]

Good question. Tongue in cheek: because it was created by an engineer. The wiki article on the Hurricane Scale #SaffirSimpson doesn't explain the weird ranges for wind speeds, either. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffir%E
Other used scales work with 5 knot increments, the wiki article states.

  6. Dear Friends,
A New ‘Category 6’ for Rating Hurricane Wind Strength Is Needed to Express the Danger From Extreme Wind Speeds Now Being Observed.

  7. Weather guru Jeff Masters:
"Any move to expand the #SaffirSimpson scale would have to come from the NHC, and there is little support for such a move from the experts there that I have heard from.

However, talking about hypothetical #Category6 storms is a valuable communication strategy for policymakers and the public, because it is important to understand how much more damaging these new #superstorms can be."
