  3. #Sellafield #NuclearWaste dump to be prosecuted for alleged #ITsecurity offences

Charges relate to four-year period between 2019 and early 2023, and follows Guardian investigation

Sellafield, which has more than 11,000 staff, was placed into a form of “special measures” for consistent failings on #cybersecurity in 2022, according to sources at the #ONR and the #SecurityServices.

  4. “Earthquake causes No catastrophic damage to #nuclear power plants.”

We have to be told this because last time .. Fukushima.

Those promoting Nuclear as Clean, Reliable, & Economic want us to forget the #Windscale reactor fire back in 1957 is still being decommissioned.

Just managing, guarding, monitoring, maintaining derelict Nuclear sites costs billions each year. There is a daily consumer tax on energy users to pay the estimated £260 billion cost of decommissioning for the next 100 years.

  5. #TheGuardian: "Sellafield nuclear site has leak that could pose risk to public"

".. worsening leak from a huge silo of rad. waste ..
.. cracks in a reservoir of toxic sludge known as B30 ..
.. leak of rad. liquid from one of the “highest nuclear hazards in the UK” .. Magnox swarf storage Silo (MSSS) – is likely to continue to 2050 .."

  6. "Sellafield, Europe’s most hazardous nuclear site, has a worsening leak from a huge silo of radioactive waste that could pose a risk to the public...

The leak of radioactive liquid from one of the “highest nuclear hazards in the UK” – a decaying building at the vast Cumbrian site – is likely to continue to 2050."

  9. "Divers in Sellafield nuclear pool for first time in 65 years"

"The nuclear power plant in Cumbria went out of use in the 1960s, and the pool was built in the 1940s for use by Windscale Piles, the site's first nuclear reactors, for the cooling, storage and de-canning of spent fuel as part of the UK's post-war atomic weapons programme. According to records, it was last entered back in 1958 to repair a broken winch, and now divers are back in the water with the rather unpleasant task of clearing sludge."

  11. Appalled by comments to this excellent article by George Monbiot, still defending #NuclearEnergy as a solution. As if nobody had learned anything from the calamitous decisions of the past that are still ruining our present:

    1. the uncontrollable 'accidents' -- #LongIsland, #Windscale, #Chernobyl, #Fukushima

    2. the everlasting #radiation

    3. the immense cost of #decommissioning and 'cleanup'

    4. and the INSOLUBLE problem of #NuclearWaste.

  12. #NuclearPower inescapably generates large quantities of #hazardous human-made waste, the worst of which will remain hazardous probably beyond Homo sapiens’ time on the planet.

Nuclear radiation less dangerous than emissions from a wood-burning stove?? Wood-burning stoves are pollutants, no question, but they could NEVER lead to a #Windscale, #ThreeMileIsland, #Chernobyl or #Fukushima. Nor will decommissioning them cost #billions and take #decades.

  13. Dismantling Sellafield: the epic task of shutting down a nuclear site (long read, 30 mins)

Excellent piece from The Guardian on making safe what is left behind when a nuclear site is shut down (one I live 45 miles from) – an almost unimaginably expensive and complex task that requires us to think not on a human timescale, but a planetary one.

  14. For many of us, the renaming of #Windscale after the toxic fire/pollution (and many safety problems) to try to obliterate #memory of the impact remains a huge stain on Britain; and on its ethical position with regard to harm, health, and the #environment. “Dismantling #Sellafield: the epic task of shutting down a #nuclear site”

  15. Spent nuclear fuel is the most substantive product of human civilization. It will be in our descendants' world long after our cities, languages and gods are forgotten.
