Die KI-Antwort auf eine Suchanfrage wie diese (paxton 5 stadien des faschismus – Google Suche) ist ein gutes Beispiel für die gefährliche Idiotie der Ersetzung von Recherche durch angebliche Ergebnisse. Der Kern des Artikels Paxtons (das funktionale Verständnis des Faschismus) wird nicht erwähnt. Die Google-Antwort erweckt den Eindruck, der Artikel könne unabhängig von einem Kontext, einer Debatte oder einer Fragestellung resümiert werden. Sie ersetzt den öffentlichen Raum, den die einzelnen Suchergebnisse der herkömmlichen Google-Liste wenigstens grob abbilden, durch einen (den eigenen) Monolog.

Es kann eben gar nicht die Zusammenfassung eines Artikels geben, sondern nur Zusammenfassungen in bestimmten Kontexten. – Mir hat neulich eine Lehrende am Studiengang Content Strategy gesagt, dass das FH-System der Masterarbeiten durch die KI-Verwendung praktisch zusammengebrochen ist. Das wundert mich nicht. Das völlig verfehlte, letztlich vor allem autoritäre Verständnis von Wissen, Diskurs und intellektueller Arbeit, das sich in einer halbfalschen und trivialen Antwort wie diesem Google-Ergebnis ausdrückt, wird zu einer für Lehrende kaum mehr angreifbaren Norm für Texte, die die Qualifikation zu wissenschaftlicher Arbeit belegen sollten.

Falls der Eindruck entstehen sollte, dass die Zusammenfassung „doch ganz gut“ ist: Paxton beschreibt nicht, wie faschistische Bewegungen an die Macht kommen, sondern was passiert, wenn sie an die Macht kommen. Er schreibt übrigens auch nicht, dass sie sich zwangsläufig radikalisieren. Wer knapp sagen will, was Paxton in seinem Aufsatz (https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/235001) tut, muss sich auf Meta-Level begeben, das für eine solche Suchmaschinen-Antwort nicht geeignet ist.

@Stoori Recognising the fascistic tendency or potential of communications modes and media formats is actually precisely what I'm encouraging here.

It's not that "all memes are fascist".

But you'll find that very nearly all fascists uses memes.

I'm reminded of the parallel with a famous observation of John Stuart Mill on stupidity and conservatives:

My view (supported by the work of Arendt, Paxton, Eco, MacDonald, and others) is that fascism is a behavioural mode, not an ideologial one, one that tends to be highly emotive, low-information, and reactionary. It probably emerges in times of high social and political stress.

Knowing that, and being aware of the risks and signs is valuable.

Yes, fascism wears ideological trappings, but those serve its behaviours and not the other way 'round. The specific ideologies claimed are fluid and flexible and inconsistent both internally and over time.
