  1. "There's a very strange thing that happens with #advancedtech, particularly #networked technologies. They get hidden away behind the glass. They become hidden within themselves and we no longer have access to them.
But something equally extraordinary happens the other way around, which is that if you start to understand them a little bit, all of these #power relationships become incredibly clear and #readable, and can actually be addressed in new ways." #JamesBridle

  6. Dear Friends not interested in infosec, :ablobcatcoffee:

As you may know, some people think closing off, hiding with obscurity, 10 factor
#verification and #encrypted this, that and the other is #progress?
Others try face, print and the latest I heard is verification through your typing in (not the sound) using Generative AI. Wot? Are you kidding?

What a pelluva. I am feeding the paranoids?
#Protecting myself from The Man? The State? Data miners? :anarchy:

    And yeti ...
The world goes on, the kids use their phone apps and EFF this and that ...
I am starting my own instance/server BUT FIRST (yes shouting - oh dear) I have to be able to get into my own accounts. Stop using Google and American 'services' which don't work most of the time.
So for example Yandex (A rusky search engine) is better by far, than the ludicrously ad impeded google. Do no evil? They now do nothing but.

This is an open rant from lobster

Have a great day everyone. Be kinder than everyone else. That is a good goal and glad I am amongst such possibilities. That be you sah! oVER AND OUTA SPACE. Yeah not typing that again.
    #Readable? #Understandable? Course it is ... ❤️

  11. Remembering that there's a #free, #adless, and #opensource #wiki alternative for #fandom s over #fandom.com, and it's called #Miraheze. The #accessibility increased for phones in the last few years. If you care about your wiki being #accessible, #privacyaware, and more #readable, and don't like #monopolies, use Miraheze.

If you want to, I can also give a custom #subdomain for your wiki outside of *.miraheze.org, mine being *.bau.app.br. The cost for using my subdomain is not making it a useless purchase (in other words, €0)
  12. @justinling IMHO, hashtags as metadata at the end of a post are a lot more palatable than #hashtags in the #middle of otherwise #readable sentences ...

  13. @benjaminhollon @freedomtowrite I’ve been trying out .css for my web site and for my blog. Would be great if they had the same look and feel. The problem I have with Hugo is there is no archive feature out of the box and I don’t have the coding skills to write it myself. Unfortunately my site is not published on the web yet so I can’t share.

  14. CW: Programming language development

Like #elm, Squarepants uses Uppercase names for: 1) module names, 2) types and 3) union type constructors.

Would the language be more or less #accessible and #readable if, instead of being Uppercase, union type constructors started with an apostrophe?

    type Maybe a =
    , Just a
    , Nothing

    vs

    type Maybe a =
    'just a
    'nothing

The apostrophe is used nowhere else in the language, so if you see it, you can be sure you are seeing a union type constructor.
It is available without shift on most keyboard layouts.
However using it like this has no parallels whatsoever in non-computer languages.
What other considerations am I missing?

  15. PHP Part 2:

Header and Footer are static; Update is where the last update date and any messsages go; form is where the button is that you use to trigger the script; main is where all the preformatted network data is dumped by my script.

With the help of .css by the grace of @benjaminhollon, I had my network status page; it was amazing. I even got it into crontab the first time to run hourly.

It was beautiful. And obviously doomed.

  16. I recently posted about how I prefer to see #hashtags positioned within #Mastodon content, as a #ScreenReader user. That post has picked up some momentum, and my thanks to everyone that has shared, favourited and/or engaged with it via thoughtful discourse.

I'd like to highlight that screen reader users vary widely in their consumption habits and preferences, and my views are nothing but personal predilections. Regardless of the approach you take, you are expressing an interest in making your content as #accessible and #readable as possible to an audience who experience the world differently to how you do. This is heartening and refreshing to many Mastodon newcomers, and extremely appreciated.

Accessibility is not a binary state, and you are not doing it "wrong" if you put your hashtags inline, or at the end, or both! There are many more impactful aspects to #SocialMedia #equity, like #ImageDescriptions (also known as #AltText), which are in abundance on Mastodon and a joy to read.

  17. This #site is #great, but I #do have
    #reservations about the #abuse of #hashtags inside the #text.

Some of your #toots are barely #readable.

Maybe some #restraint is required when you use #hashtags.
