  1. I swear somethings up with weather prediction this year. I headed out for a walk / shopping an hour ago, and although I could see some distant clouds which looked threatening there were no weather watches or warnings and no forecasted precipitation.

Fast forward to 15 minutes ago and suddenly there's both a thunderstorm and squall warning from Environment Canada, at which point the heavens opened and the thunder sounded.

  2. RE: mstdn.ca/@MTL_Transit_Status_e

More fool me for getting REM’d this morning.

The three stations between Édouard-Montpetit and Gare Centrale are functionally an important part of the Metro network at this juncture.

So, I ended up taking the long way around the mountain, which was about as much time as I’d have had to wait for the REM to restore service in the end (~25 minutes).

Not sure what my point is here 🤔

  3. I think this is the first time we’ve experienced an orange alert under the new system?

Hope this one won’t be as bad as the one two years ago, but just in case we have the candles ready for those extra-cosy power cut vibes.

  4. I walked the dog earlier and within 400m I had already met on the sidewalks:

    • a lady cross-country skiing
    • a couple with snow shoes

I told them I was jealous, the snow was like 25-30cm deep. #QCStorm #Montreal

The Windsor-Quebec City corridor got hit with two winter storms in 4 days -- some areas have received 60+cm of snow, with drifts over a meter.

If you've got cabin fever, bundle up and check on neighbours! Check to make sure they've got heat and are stocked up on food.

Heat pumps work by circulating air -- if they're blocked by snow drifts, they don't work as well.

Also, make sure exhausts from dryers and high-efficiency gas furnaces aren't covered by snow.

  11. Check out the Arctic blast coming for Ontario and Quebec over the next 48 hours. #Montréal is going to go from around 13°C Wednesday afternoon to around -13°C Thursday morning.

  12. Latest forecast from Environment #Canada states "Snow and ice pellet amount 10 to 15 cm." With winds "...20 km/h gusting to 40 increasing to 40 gusting to 70 this evening".

A good opportunity to remind folks to invest in good surge protectors and a UPS, and to verify your backups. Last ice storm knocked out my NAS, and I only just have everything back to the way it was.

  13. I wasn't too worried about the 30cm of snow that were originally forecasted, but the prospect of another Ice Storm like the one we had last spring is making me pretty down.

Already double checking my UPSs and charging my battery banks.

  14. @ai6yr Soils in New England and adjacent parts of Canada are already near saturation. Flooding, like you say, is the main threat but saturated soils also make it easy for trees to fall over in what might generally be considered benign wind speeds.

Sorry for the million hashtags to follow there’s lots of little states here.

  17. The sky is dark, and it looks like a car wash outside here in #montreal east. Electricity is flickering. Glad I bought that generator during the ice storm earlier this year.

Kind of getting exhausted of this extreme weather and I don't think we'll be seeing any less of it.

  18. Repeated information for every tiny little town...
"Kangiqsujuaq - Raglan Lake" "Quaqtaq" "etc. etc. and all with "Strong easterly winds reaching up to 90 kilometres per hour are expected Wednesday afternoon. Winds will gradually diminish in the evening. ### Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #qcstorm "

  19. Still no power here. Seeing power come back slowly through greater Montreal on the outage map, but the West Island is still hit pretty hard.

  20. Snow really coming down here in #montreal. Another 15-20cm of snow today after whatever we got yesterday. Been outside to shovel my walkway about an hour ago and it already looks like I haven't done it at all again. #QCStorm
  21. My wife, an American who wasn't living here at the time, is watching a documentary on the 1998 ice storm that hit here in #Montreal. I believe it's the anniversary of that storm today. We just had some freezing rain overnight last night, so there's a lot of ice out there today.

It kind of put into perspective how bad that ice storm was back in the day by comparison with what we got today. Also, hearing all the old news reports is bringing back some bad memories of what it was like to live through that storm in '98. 2 weeks with no electricity, no heat, wearing multiple jackets inside the house, seeing your breath at all times and wondering if you'll wake up in the morning. And so many people ended up having it so much worse than I did. :kirbyblue: #QCStorm
  22. Today in 1998, the Great Ice Storm begins to hit Ontario and Quebec.
The storm causes $7 billion in damages, leaves 4 million without power and results in 28 deaths in Canada.
It results in the largest deployment of Canadian troops since the Korean War, who are deployed to help
