  1. Wonderful to hear Stuart Hall, he was so clear. This is an extract from a film recording of a lecture given in 2004 at the Carribean Reasonings conference. A true #PublicIntellectual #PresentConjuncture www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHph...

  2. Anyone any thoughts as to why Yuval Noah Harari is getting such a kicking from reviewers for Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks From the Stone Age to AI?

Is it really so different from 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, or even Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind?

Sure, his work leans on making sweeping generalisations and bold pronouncements, often on subjects of which he has little knowledge or expertise

But hasn’t that same ‘infotainment’ style earned him praise and awards as a global public intellectual for almost a decade now? So why the backlash?

  7. My Centre for Postdigital Cultures colleague Marcus Maloney is on a public intellectual roll at the moment. Last week it was his research showing how EA Sports’ Fifa20 reproduces racial stereotypes in football. This week he’s on RT World news discussing Andrew Tate and toxic masculinity. Good to see alternative takes on the ‘crisis of masculinity’ to that of Jordan Peterson et al being given airtime.
