If you saw me talking about #PhoenixStation last month a bunch and wondered what happened, today's #thursday #blogpost is for you! The short answer is: it's on hiatus until my life gets stable again, but I'm still working on it and I'll be bringing it back later (perhaps this year!). I don't like having to stop something that I just started, but sometimes life doesn't give you any leeway.

We're over a week into #2024, so today's #thursday #blogpost is about my #goals for the following year. I'm not a resolutions kind of person, but I do believe in having goals. Although some events right at the start of 2024 have jumbled up my goals, I've still got some. In short: Writing two novels. Finishing my MFA. Maybe a return to #PhoenixStation, if my life stabilizes. Plus new, shorter blog content.

It's the first #thursday of the month, so time for a writing prompt roundup #blogpost! Featuring prompts for each day of December from #WordWeavers, #PennedPossibilities, and #WritersCoffeeClub, this post offers a little insight into what I'm like as a #mystery writer and the person behind the writing. Although #PhoenixStation has been put on hiatus, there's still a bit of it here!

Ok, I went ahead and took all the #PhoenixStation posts off my blog. Sad to see them go, but it's a bit out of my hands. They're still in drafts. When my life gets stable enough that I can do it again (likely after I graduate in October), then I will try to bring it back.
By the by, if anyone knows of a place for a mystery writer/game designer (writing focus, but I speak code too), please feel free to let me know. I'm still working at my job, but I'll need more income now.

Something has come up suddenly and it is looking like I won't have the time to dedicate to #PhoenixStation like I thought. I am very frustrated right now, but suddenly find that I may not have a place to live soon, and that is shattering all of my plans that I had for this year.
I'm probably going to take down the posts because it will be very silly to have just two things up and nothing else while I find a paying job and somewhere to live.

Jan 02 #WordWeavers—What scene in your current WIP are you proudest of?
In Facility 108, it's perhaps a scene where Anthony owns up to his own failure. I was really in the character at the moment and it felt raw and emotional and I was surprised what I did through him.
Faceless Justice needs a lot of work, so I'm not proud of anything there yet.
#PhoenixStation doesn't have a lot of writing yet, but I think I'd be nowhere if Kal didn't jump off the page at me in his first journal.

Jan 1 #WordWeavers—What are your writing plans for the coming year?
First accomplishment is finishing a full draft of Facility 108. By the end of February.
Then, much of the year will be working on my thesis novel. And graduating from my MFA.
I also am hoping to produce a couple dozen pieces for #PhoenixStation, alongside my regular blog content.
I *should* have a novelette release later this year (or maybe beginning of next).
And I'm still doing game writing stuff I can't talk about.

Jan 1 #WritersCoffeeClub—What are your writing related New Year Resolution?
Happy New Year everybody! I'm not big on resolutions, but I do have goals. I'll be finishing off two novels this year. One is my thesis novel. The other is a novel I resurrected from the dead as a side project so I could work on something instead of my thesis novel (not procrastinating—I had to stop adding words until my thesis classes started). I'm also hoping to get a good start into #PhoenixStation. It's a busy year!

So, I put all of these things in my stories because I want people to talk about them, see them working, see people discussing them in a positive, yearning way.
But also, sometimes I put things in just for fun or intrigue. I wanted to give a character a little extra something in #PhoenixStation, so I made up an entire movement of colonies surrounded by the idea of free and informed choices. (We'll get around to meeting Fift in the new year.)

Dec 31 #WritersCoffeeClub—Will you be writing today? How do you feel about your writing journey over the last year?
Only if writing a discussion board post for classes counts 😅 Sunday is a school day for me.
I have accomplished so much over this year, and so much of it I can't talk about. That's both awful and wonderful, because I spent so long wanting to be where I am. I've mostly finished one novel. I wrote a novelette (forthcoming). I started #PhoenixStation. It's been a blast!

Hey #WritingCommunuty, I've started a project recently where I share short, serial fiction on my blog for people to read. #PhoenixStation for those curious, also pinned to my profile. Is that something that I should share in #WritingCommunity or are there better hashtags to use? I'm a bit unsure where readers hang out, or how to share stories with them.

177—Does your MC or SC have a love-hate relationship with anyone or anything?
I think that's Ash and Spencer. Spencer does not like Ash, and Ash doesn't feel like it's warranted.
Over in the facility, Amrit (a secondary character) starts off absolutely hating Anthony's guts, and later finds some kind of friendship that Anthony manages to mess up.
In #PhoenixStation, there's a character we haven't met yet who everyone hates, and she doesn't make it hard to hate her.

Kal arrives at the R. S. Phoenix on today's #thursday #blogpost. In this installment for #PhoenixStation, Kal enters the station and is immediately on duty. Join Kal as he begins his journey, dealing with his own thoughts, the dangers of microgravity, and a curious situation altogether.

This is is rendered as a whole scene. There will be more scenes to come, but I'll have some other blog content before then!

For yesterday's #WritersCoffeeClub, I considered sharing a layout map I did for #PhoenixStation, but I think it's a little misleading and unintelligible (and incomplete) for public consumption. But I thought about it, so here's a little extra thing for those of you here. Consider it a work in progress and not to scale or anything like that. Sorry for people with any kind of issues with color (it was to be only for me)! Also, I went a bit ham in the image description if you want an explanation!

Hey everyone! It's #thursday and today's #blogpost is the first entry of my project #PhoenixStation
Let me introduce you to Kal Loomis. Or let him introduce himself as he writes his first journal entry for his stay on the R. S. Phoenix. He'll let you know what's going on and provide a little bit of his backstory and a question that intrigues him so!

Welcome to Phoenix Station. On today's #thursday #blogpost, I'm introducing a new project called Phoenix Station. This is a collection of #stories and snippets following Kal Loomis as he runs away from his life in 2092. Kal's going all out, taking a position on the Research Station Phoenix, which is 500 miles above the surface of the Earth.
This first entry introduces the project and next week Kal will introduce himself!

Seeking: service specialist needed urgently for a unique position aboard Research Station Phoenix. This, live-in appointment above the Earth’s atmosphere provides a life experience like non-other, assisting the crew and researchers aboard one of the nation’s most exclusive and elite laboratories. As a service specialist, your job will be to aid the crew in their day-to-day activities, ensuring that they stay healthy, happy, safe, and doing their good work. No experience necessary, training will be provided. Interested individuals should apply quickly, as this position will be filled quickly!
Welcome to Phoenix Station, a loose collection of stories and snippets written by me. Do you ever dream of just running as far away from everyone as you possibly could? Do you ever think that might not be far enough? So does Kal Loomis, the lucky person to be selected for the job posting up above. It’s 2092, and things on the Earth are going better than we feared at the start of the century, but for Kal, he wants to hide as far away from his life as he can. So, of course, he signs on to spend a year literally 500 miles off the surface of the Earth. And he didn’t even tell anyone he was going.
Join me as I explore Kal’s experience upon the research station. The crew is going to be slightly out there. After all they decided for their own reasons to reach for the stars, and Kal is going to be the outsider coming in. But this isn’t a story about being in space, this is a story about existing relationships, accidents, and whatever Kal needs to do to make sure the crew is healthy, happy, and most importantly, safe. I can assure you now, this may look like a science-fiction project at the start, but you and I know that I write mysteries, and I love a good unexplained death or two.
The first entry will come next week at the same time, and more entries will come interspersed with my regular blog content. Take this as an opportunity to get to know me as a writer, but also to lose yourself in a slightly fantastic mystery story that will play out in parts over time. I’m going to have fun writing them, so I hope you enjoy reading! Next week, you’ll meet Kal Loomis in the form of his first journal entry aboard Phoenix Station. I hope you love him as much as I already do!
