I spent part of my morning texting back and forth with Lali Donovan, who I interviewed for #ParadiseLostZine. She's the only woman in the #zine. She moved away from her hometown of Sarasota, #Florida to see what a different #punk scene might have to offer. Lali relocated to the Bay Area in 1990 which was such an insane time to be there. Made some more copies of #ParadiseLostZine and dropped a few off at Mindset boardshop. I like the slow burn of independently published media—slowly making its way around town, reaching people one by one via word of mouth over a long period of time.

As a #zine maker, I can die happy now. Went and saw Aaron & Scott at a book event last week. They’re touring with their book “A Punk House in the Deep South: The Oral History of 309” and I gave them both copies of #ParadiseLostZine. Zine audiobook is funny 😆. Cometbus will always be a huge inspiration and it was lovely to catch up with Aaron. We hadn’t seen each other in 11 years! (Sorry not sorry for the IG screenshot. A friend just sent it to me.)

I can barely imagine a time before MRR and Dischord but Dan Destructo lived it. In his interview, he describes the beginnings of his band NO FRAUD, the birth of a hardcore scene in 1980s SW #Florida, and the formation of underground networks of international distribution by and for youth at that time.

After reading through it for the first time, Jake approached me with tears in his eyes, telling me how much he loved the zine. He is one of the ppl I interviewed for #ParadiseLostZine who grew up here and got to witness the formation of the punk scene. What an honor. We’ve known each other for a couple of years now, but working on this together definitely deepened our friendship. #Zines are amazing for cultivating connection and #punk is magic.

Dropped some #zines off at Mindset Boardshop in Sarasota. The owner, Ryan, just moved here a year ago, is into #PunkRock and sometimes uses the parking lot behind his shop as a place for bands to play. I’m so excited to share this stuff with folks in town who have no idea about Sarasota’s #PunkPast.

#Skateboarding was the beginning of everything. In #ParadiseLostZine, interviewees describe how the hardcore #punk scene in Sarasota started with skaters and surfers. Jake Loomis, now a high school teacher and potter, pictured below as a teen, describes how he went from breakdancing to skating and then found punk. For #ParadiseLostZine, I spoke with five individuals who grew up in SW #Florida and were around to witness the formation of Sarasota’s hardcore #punk scene in the mid-1980s. Within these interviews is some nostalgia tempered with the harsh reality of racism, violence, dysfunctional family dynamics and so on. Memory is always incomplete, and the interviewees push up against that limitation continuously as they try to recall the events of 40 years ago. This #NanGoldin quote seemed relevant. #zines
