🦋 Observation Report
A swallowtail butterfly (Papilio) emerged with deformed wings and cannot fly. Normally, such individuals survive only a few days. However, this one has lived 10 days after eclosion (as of Oct 3) — exceeding the expected lifespan.

New #fieldwork tool: #pentax #papilio binoculars. Killer feature: focus as close as 50 cm! Great for watching pollinators, examining plants, other 'micro' work that's not possible with normal binos that don't focus closer than 2 m.

Very light, comfortable to wear all day. Under $200. Not sure how they'll hold up, but so far they're great.

Short-tailed Swallowtails (Papilio brevicauda) are much rarer and more localized than Black Swallowtail. Coastal marshes, dunes and headlands where the host plant, Scotch Lovage, grows within 100 meters of the ocean. Very restricted distribution – its global range is restricted to areas surrounding the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We saw these in the Iles-de-la-Madeleine.
