The #oldcomputerchallenge has ended and I have wrapped things up for my project (not sure what to call it. Basically an appliance (?) with emulated video pinball and pachinko games stuffed in an old PC case.) Here is the #gopher site for my project for this year:
gopher://booji.mutated.net/1/projects/occ/occ_26
For the gopher-impaired:

#WeekOfPatching ⨯ #OldComputerChallenge day 7
some good old bell synthesis in #SuperCollider 2
percussive, lowpassed pink noise hits excite a Klank with 20 resonators. plus i again put some bandpass filters on top for added weirdness. all sorts of parameters get randomized rhythmically

And so we come to the end of the #OldComputerChallenge. The game is done!
Features:
- Fully playable
- Loads puzzles in the .non format (find some in nonogram-db by Michael Terry
- Support any Windows version since Windows 95 and NT 3.1, and Wine
- ...but also modern Windows features like high-DPI screens
- Comes as a .exe download as well as a floppy disk image with the game, source code and several example puzzles
- Hidden "developer tools". Find and try them! -

worked more on my 68k audio Forth-like. stack values are no longer just integers, i can also pass wavetables around to combine different oscillators and LFOs
so i made this haunted "melody" on the 160 and then fed it into a #SuperCollider 2 patch on the iBook, adding bass drones and some fx like delay & randomly changing resonant bandpasses
both laptops are running extremely close to the limit of their DSP capacity 😄

#WeekOfPatching ⨯ #OldComputerChallenge day 5
custom drone softsynth for Macintosh System 7, playing 4 lo-fi sines with amplitude LFOs at different rates. the LFO math is still wrong but ive struggled enough for tonight
this is filtered by Waldorf 2-pole with cutoff modulated by a slow LFO + envelope follower for some movement
finally Boss RV-6 adds a shimmer reverb which is toned way down to cut the actual shimmer and just provide a bit of space

Windows NT 3.x is such an interesting thing. It looks like Windows 3.1 but feels decidedly unlike it. Proper native 32 bit, no DOS booting before it, support for long filenames, real users accounts, etc.
And it runs my little game without modification!

#WeekOfPatching ⨯ #OldComputerChallenge day 4
its just random midi notes, sorry i mean "aleatory chromaticism", from SuperCollider 2 playing a Volca FM pad into Monotron Delay for some space and crunch
apparently #SuperCollider turns 30 years old this year. i dont know when exactly but happy anniversary to my favorite music programming language

Nono now runs at 4K/120Hz on select hardware! Without janky scrolling, this time.

#WeekOfPatching ⨯ #OldComputerChallenge day 3
Reason 2.5 rack patch (no sequencer tracks) on iBook G3. two Malströms controlled by four Matrixes + two Redrums. i put different step counts on everything so things dont really sync up. thats how you know its Intelligent Dance Music
in the background is nature's own patch (birds heard through the window)
i need to sleep

Back to the XP laptop today, implementing improved scrolling (with mouse wheel support) and some refactoring and fixes.
On Debian, Firefox is unusably slow but Dillo works well enough on my simple site so I'm using that now. Doesn't get past the #Codeberg proof-of-work captcha though.

It's amazing but the Nintendo Wii, with its palsy 729 Mhz and 64 MB of RAM, can actually cross compile my little WIndows game without issues using the latest MinGW from pkgsrc! Just takes 3.5 minutes to do it, compared to .4s on my new laptop.
As does the old Pentium M laptop, which also runs the game fine in Wine.

uneasy SuperCollider chords clocked by network pings 👽
- MacTCP Ping on the PowerBook 160 sends out ICMP pings over the network
- pingtrig, my pcap based program, captures them on the EeePC 900 and converts to OSC https://codeberg.org/pulu/pingtrig
- SuperCollider (also on EeePC) runs a state machine based chord pattern with synth parameters modulated by statistical properties of the ping timing -

Welcome to the Old Computer Challenge, where modern-day masochists 🤓 gather to prove that yes, you can absolutely run out of RAM in 2023! Nothing screams progress like a 512MB limit and a quaint mailing list to document your digital suffering. 📟✨
