#northernwaterthrush — Public Fediverse posts

Another volunteer workday. Starting to prep for the fall picnic at the Nature Center, so we were cleaning up trails and making sure everyone will be safe.

Another migrant showed up on the Rare Bird list, this a long range migrant, breeding in Canada and northern forests and overwintering in southern Mexico, Caribbean, Central America and northern South America. We only see the Northern Waterthrush briefly during its migration. A wood warbler, not a thrush, with all the behavioral characteristics and attitude.

I visited specifically hoping to find this bird, actually a ground-dwelling wood-warbler that lives in wet areas with dense brush. It helped that the creek that winds through that end of the park was reduced by drought (the bullfrogs didn't appreciate it, though).

I decided to pay a return visit to The Ramble in Central Park, NYC. I hadn't been back since last May's Warblerfest. While I didn't catch as many bird species, I did get some interesting shots. See Alt-text for id's and other info.

A northern waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis). These are the largest warblers we get in NYC and are frequently found foraging near the edges of freshwater during migration.
