#PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum.
I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail!
The king snake is not venomous.

I did meet and talk to this wonderful family at the creek. Enjoying the water and swimming together. It was early dawn. Purposely avoiding crowds and potential authority issues. This morning, John and I walked the neighborhood and took a bunch of pictures of the flood residue from yesterday.
While we were walking along Ward Creek on the back side of the neighborhood, we came upon a surprise! Brutus scared this snake out of the debris. It was not happy with us and it scared the crap out of me.
EDIT: This is a Diamondback Water Snake or Nerodia rhombifer. Nonvenomous. Nasty bite.
