  1. Good morning. 💮💮💮

    9 August 2026

We’re in the heart of hurricane season, and so far the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico are pretty quiet — knock on wood. Down here it’s natural to wonder how many years we can go without a big storm passing over. Tropical Storm Bertha skirted the coast a few weeks ago, but we’re about seventy miles north as the crow flies, so we only got the tiniest bit of rain. I read that El Niño is strong and still strengthening this year, which suppresses Atlantic storm formation. That’s good, I think. I don’t enjoy the days when the rain blows sideways.

I wondered for a second if the name Baton Rouge meant “batten down the hatches.” Not even close. It means “red stick,” which is an odd name for a city. The story goes back to 1699, when French explorers saw a tall, reddish cypress pole on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. Local Native American tribes had placed animal skulls on it to mark the boundary between hunting territories. So the French wrote it down as le bâton rouge. I just learned that this morning, so now we’ve all learned something.

For some reason, that reminds me of the old TV show F Troop, when Chief Wild Eagle gives directions to the soldiers: “Go past the rock that looks like a bear… then the bear that looks like a rock.” For me, that was the most memorable line in the whole series. If you’re not of a certain age, you may not have even heard of F Troop. Look it up.

Today will be a good day. As Sergeant O’Rourke, played by Forrest Tucker, would often say: “O’Rourke Enterprises guarantees it!”

“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” — Victor Hugo

“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” — Saint Francis of Assisi

“I knew this would happen!” - Corporal Agarn
