@argv_minus_one Seems consistent. Banks are antithetical to user freedom. Consumer transactions are nannied by banks who (e.g.) push blockades like blocking all Wikileaks donations. Banking apps (both phone and web) are all #nonfreesoftware. Cryptocurrency accommodates #freesoftware, unlike any bank in the world.

That's where one is showing signs of not having done the research, bitcoin (and monero) are hosted all over the world by people who use it, tens of thousands have a copy of the ledger, in the form of a blockchain. It is #uncensorable but *does* have certain risks if one's device has malware (#nonFreeSoftware).It helped #Wikileaks when #Paypal and #Visa (now #CloudGlare) dropped them, for revealing #warCrimes by the US.
Bitcoin does require #computers/people be better, though. 😑

@kev I’ve detected a bit of intellectual dishonesty here. #Fosstodon used the standard default #Cloudflare configs as early as March & for months thereafter, certainly at least as late as May 29th confirmed by someone’s complaint specifically about the block screen.The timeline shows complaints about CF are littered around before & after that point. If you expand some of the threads in that timeline, it’s clear the default CF configs persisted despite Fosstodon staff being told that the default configs were resulting in users being forced to run non-free software & that the configs needed to change. That change never happened because I know I saw the block screen whenever I tried to directly visit fosstodon.
Fosstodon finally made a recent move from CF proxy to CF NS, which was just yesterday announced, a day after my post. I am not checking every day to see what fosstodon does next.
Under the current config, you can spontaneously switch on the CF reverse proxy at any moment with immediate effect without even telling users all their traffic will be seen by Cloudflare (including passwords). It’s in fact the only way that the reverse proxy can work. If you don’t use the MitM certs, CF cannot process the requests for you during an attack.
So the compromise is still in place. The only difference is that now it’s spontaneous instead of continuously ongoing. And most likely you’ve probably not fixed the CF configs, so when you flip that switch users will get a captcha that pushes #nonfreesoftware. The goal should be to get off CF entirely including nameservers.

Round 2: #Poll to name ppl refusing #nonFreeSoftware. Vote for a word that best suits this criteria:
→ What would you want to be called?
→ What word would CNN journalists use?
→ What’s reasonable for folk & reggae lyrics?Guidelines:
- 1 box if a word is clearly best
- 3 boxes against a word that is clearly the worst
- 2 boxes for ties
- chk comments for better words & reply +1fossarian¹ → #FOSS —arian
libresarian → Libre Software—arian
fossist → FOSS—ist
libreswist → Libre SoftWare—ist -
Suppose you refuse to run #nonFreeSoftware. What would you want to be called?
* “Fossarian” → #FOSS —arian… described here:
https://thefreeworld.noblogs.org/post/2023/04/15/what-do-you-call-people-who-reject-non-free-software/* “swefarian” → SoftWare Emancipation/Freedom —arian
* “paoswarian” → People Against Oppressive SoftWare —arian
* “libreswarian” → Libre SoftWare —arian
* “write-in” votes are strongly encouraged→ invent a word & put it in a comment.
Plz read the thread b/c you might want to vote on someone else’s nomenclature (reply to them with “+1”).

@Wuzzy Governments are now pushing #nonfreesoftware. This is more of a tyranny than what we see in the private sector b/c you cannot boycott the government. Tax finances gov agencies who then impose nonfree s/w & you are excluded from services you’re entitled to b/c of your lifestyle choice. We need to drive the point that those govs are discriminating against fossarian people.
-
@Wuzzy I must say when I tried to visit your post in a GUI browser, Fosstodon tried to force me to run #nonfreesoftware by pushing a nonfree JavaScript CAPTCHA. I assume you’re unaware of that because it’s a glaring #hypocrisy on the part of the #Fosstodon admin. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. Though I’m struggling to envision improvements on the essay from that feedback.

@skobkin @gitea @codeberg @twann If you have a FOSS project & you force your devs to run #nonfreesoftware, you’re reducing your contributors to those who have no ethical problem w/non-free s/w. OTOH, if the platform is free of nonfree s/w then your project welcomes contributions from both those who care and those who don't. Moreover, it's not just about devs because the bug tracker needs to be fed by all users.

@lord @TheOuterLinux #Libera uses MS for web hosting & they've jailed their web gateway in #cloudflare. #OFTC forces you to solve a Google #reCAPTCHA (thus #nonfreesoftware) to get a cloak -- & some channels (e.g. #gnucash) force you to register before you have a voice. So bad options all around.
-
@fsf #FSF's rationale for switching to #Libera.chat ignores FSF's own criteria for the decision & comes down to essentially "As we have had nearly twenty years of positive experiences with the Freenode staff". Yet libera.chat violates FSF's own criteria. web.libera.chat *forces* people to run #nonfreesoftware, & b/c tor users must 1st reg. outside tor, anonymity is not respected.

@danie10
Headline says "#European" when it should really just say "#German".It's quite the opposite in #Denmark, where you have #RUC pushing #nonfreesoftware onto students. And the students also have little respect for #freesoftware. Not a single student in the college of science & environment uses #linux at that #Danish school.
