  1. Finally sorted my RUC for my RV. Had to double check I was reading the odometer right 'cause it was at exactly 56,000 Km. Since RUC is bought in 1,000 Km increments, I guess it will make it easier to figure out when I'm due to buy some more?

Had some extra $ in the car maintenance fund so I've bought what I hope is a year's worth of RUC. There is so much admin. to just keep a car street legal, and now this is one more.

(registration, WOF, insurance, service, and now this)

  2. The Good Friday Agreement #GFA, signed in 1998, ended most of the violence of #TheTroubles.
It called for a commission to review policing in #NorthernIreland. As a consequence, in 2001, the Royal Ulster Constabulary #RUC was reformed and renamed to #PSNI.
Jon Boutcher, the Chief Constable of the PSNI, leads Operation #Kenova, which has spent the last seven years, and £40m, investigating 101 murders and abductions linked to the #British military double-agent known by the code #Stakeknife.

One of the report’s most serious conclusions is that the impunity was discussed at Cabinet level during the conflict and continued until six years after the #IRA ceasefire of 1994 and two years after the Good Friday Agreement.
    (Prime Ministers: Margaret #Thatcher, #JohnMajor, Tony #Blair.)

  3. Going down the rabbit hole... Looks like WSP Global - a Canadian consulting company en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSP_Glob - is pushing #RUC across the US and many DOTs are buying into it. Seems like something #StrongTowns should have on their radar but I could not find them commenting on it.

  4. A toll system w/ #CongestionPricing could be an alternative. The problem with this is that something like #GoodToGo needs expensive equipment. The cost of building this out needs to be weight against the cost of #RUC. My guess is that the long term cost of it is lower than the administrative cost of RUC with all its exemptions. It can be made much fairer by only charging in places where alternatives are available and it's a better tool to address congestion and environmental concerns. #Traffic

  5. This sounds like it will cause huge administration overhead.

The charge is per mile. Not all miles traveled cause the same cost to society though. A 2.5 ton F150 causes more damage to the road than a 1.8 ton Leaf or a 1.5 ton Soul. Not to speak of a 4.5 ton EV Hummer.

An #RUC will do nothing to alleviate congestion. The price is too low to get people to use public transport instead in places where it is possible and will still make people pay who have no other choice.

  6. #Washington is planning a #RoadUsageCharge (#RUC). The main driver for this seems to be that WA is mostly funding its road maintenance from the gas tax and that is projected to fall significantly, ostensibly due to EVs ("from $1.3 billion in 2026 to under $1 billion in 2035" - washingtonstatestandard.com/20). I understand that the migration to EVs causes revenue loss that needs to be addressed but I'm very skeptical that an RUC can be implemented in a reasonable way.

  7. "The battle of the Bogside was an important catalyst for change, triggering a determined British government intervention that ended the unionist monopoly on power. But it also marked the beginning of 30 years of violent conflict that would claim the lives of more than 3,600 people and bring untold suffering."

  8. This is the sort of negligent #journalism that hinders #ClimateAction. Not only does Niles Bijoux ask the wrong question, the answer he does provide is incorrect and based on lazy assumptions (see 🧵 ).

Tl;dr: In #NZ, a #Tesla Model Y #EV is cheaper to run than a hybrid Toyota RAV4, even when factoring in Road User Charges (#RUC), but more importantly (and omitted completely) produces an eighth of the #GHGemissions.

  10. Family & internal medicine doctors asked if the AMA could "modernize" how its Medicare-payment-whisper-advice committee works.

Their ask? If it would be possible to "incorporate evidence-based data."

The answer from surgery, dermatology, pain management, radiology: "We don't like that."

  11. From @STAT:
"A new paper suggests a simple fix to the primary care physician shortage"

    TLDR? Have #medicare ( #CMS ) pay them more. #healthinsurance too

This has been discussed in the media and a big subject of advocacy for decades but apparently you can still publish a paper about it now.

  12. @EU_Commission @tcarrez @koherecoWatchdog In principle we should be able to compel #RUC to change their embarrassing and harmful misusage of language by pointing to the EU Commission.

  13. @koherecoWatchdog @tcarrez If the @EU_Commission can’t get this right, it’s a disaster because they are used as an example for language usage. Language is important. #RoskildeUniversity (#RUC) has an internal webpage entitled “free software”, where they actually distribute gratis proprietary copies of MS Office. They refused to correct the language misuse.

  15. My 🐘 #introduction 👋

I'm a researcher at Roskilde University (#RUC) in 🇩🇰. My background is #physics and research I do revolves around #fluiddynamics 🌊 💦 using #CFD and #theory. Much of my work is focused on #thinfilms or #droplets. My perferred #CFD tool is #LBM but I started using #VOF with #openfoam. I try to be open when it comes to coding which is why I switch languages for different tasks #julialang, #python, #C++, #JS.
    Besides that I'm into #running 🏃‍♂️, #gaming, #coffee ☕ and #politics.

  16. @nextcloud @koherecoWatchdog The #RUC library also denied ebooks to students who were unwilling or unable to access the #Cloudflare website that served them. The #Chromebook ban is a good start but there is a hell of a lot of work to do along these lines in #Denmark to free the students from #surveillanceCapitalism.

  17. @koherecoWatchdog @nextcloud It’s good news, but note that I went to a #Danish university (#RUC in #Denmark) and was forced to use MS Outlook for email; got excluded from several activities because I was not on #Facebook (which the school uses officially), and was forced to use #GoogleDocs (had to borrow someone’s mobile phone to verify a Google account).

  18. @alu Online or at a university? #Roskilde University (#RUC) is free to EU citizens and they have a chem program, but there are some downsides to that school. You’ll generally be required to use products and services of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Cloudflare.. the school is dependent on several tech giants which should be embarrassing for a college of science & environment.

  19. @redstarfish @vesperto Just to give an idea of how persersely insidious schools have gotten, at #RUC students are forced by their peers to obtain & use a #Google account, which requires giving Google a mobile phone#. Should a student at a tax-funded *public* school be excluded from education for not having a mobile phone? Students without #Facebook are excuded from some classes & class announcements.

  20. @redstarfish I must say Wojciech Kosior did not succeed because he used a lab machine that ran non-free software. But I will say that he probably did as good as humanly possible.

I hope the fact that his university made it impossible reflects poorly on the university enough to cause some embarrassment.

In my case, avoiding non-free software at #RUC (#Roskilde University) was a disaster. There are no labs. Everyone brings their own laptops (which wasn't directed, everyone just assumed this). No one in the class ran linux.

The first class required using #MatLab. I probably could have installed GNU Octave instead, but RUC does /everything/ in groups. So even if the prof would allow me to use Octave it's unlikely I could assemble a group of Octave users. I would probably have to get the prof to allow me to work in a 1-person group.

Many of the students in groups for other classes had to collaborate on papers in realtime. Most groups fight LaTeX/Overleaf. They prefer gdocs. I got a group to agree in advance to do all deliverables in Overleaf. Then when the 1st deliverable was due, everyone in the group voted to switch to gdocs. I was fucked.

The general attitude of all technology & science students at this #Denmark school was that proprietary tools were inherently better, & the students were already so fixed in their commercial tools I really don't see free software getting traction. This is a school that has a "Free Software" internal webpage which actually distributes gratis proprietary software. They also refused to change the heading of the page from "Free Software".

  21. @danie10
Headline says "#European" when it should really just say "#German".

It's quite the opposite in #Denmark, where you have #RUC pushing #nonfreesoftware onto students. And the students also have little respect for #freesoftware. Not a single student in the college of science & environment uses #linux at that #Danish school.

  22. @0 @climagic At #RUC in #Denmark there are no computer labs. Students bring their own laptops, and not a single student in the college of school and technology uses #linux. All MAC & Microsnot Winblows. Papers are written with #Google docs or MS Office. #LaTeX is tolerated but discouraged. The university is dependant on #GAMCAF.
