Activity Relay 3.0.0 and Activity Relay Directory 1.0.0 Released!
I am pleased to announce that Activity Relay 3.0 and Activity Relay Directory 1.0 are released! This brings a conclusion to this passion project. I've been dabbling in the Fediverse for a while, and have, for some years, wanted to run my own relay. Of course, there were never very many good relay packages, and of what there were, were incomplete or incompatible with Friendica (or Wordpress!, which was what I wanted to use as my platform of choice. You can get them […] -

2608 Fediverse stats since 2024

I am looking for a fedi-software in order to set up a a fairly small community of bikers (with special motorcycles - like Russian boxers 😁 ) Selfhosted or by a dedicated hoster (like Markus e.g.). A "Forum" like in the good old days. I think I will give it a name with "BBS" in it. 🤓
Any proposals?
The link aggregators are no option. #NodeBB is over the top. Also I do not like the unorganized look. #Mastodon or alike would kind of work but is a bit off.
My first impulse: #Friendica. I know it quite well, it can handle #groups, it has no silly char-limit, and it is feasable for people with little or no IT-background (I think).
But some time has passed since i used it. I do not know if it is still up-to-date and kicking. 🤷♂️
Can it handle #forums and #sub-forums too?
Is there an #app something I miss?
One of the *key-variants perhaps?

@blog In my opinion, we need to think about two different and not necessarily related objectives at this time:
- Identify an Activitypub standard for geolocation. For example, some software already manages geolocation (Mobilizon, Friendica, Flohmarkt, etc.), but these software don't recognize each other's geolocation parameters. The problem, as you've already highlighted, is entirely tied to searching across different federated instances, because search only works on content that's already been captured by yours.
- Find a way to "localize" content. From this perspective, Activitypub groups can be used to manage "local groups" for cities, countries, regions, etc. In Italy, for example, I've created a federated forum (a #NodeBB instance) representing twenty regional categories and about a hundred city subcategories. Those connecting from the forum see the categories hierarchically, but those connecting from the Fediverse can see individual cities as a simple federated account: cities like @roma or @venezia, but also regions like @toscana, or cities like @ivrea. Those who live in the Fediverse can mention these groups, and the group account automatically shares posts mentioning them; those who follow these groups will see posts mentioning them reshared.

A reef isn't a single organism. Things settle where conditions suit them, and the substrate they share is what makes them a reef and not a scattering of unrelated lifeforms.
ActivityPub is that substrate. The Fediverse Beyond Mastodon series is complete. We published four posts about some of what's growing on it:
1. The microblogging platforms that aren't Mastodon: Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial. Several predate Mastodon, and some were federating before ActivityPub existed.
2. The visual layer: Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube. Your work sits on infrastructure you or your community control, and no ranking system decides who sees it.
3. The writing platforms: Ghost, WordPress, WriteFreely, Micro.blog, Plume, Flipboard. Each arrived at federation by a different route.
4. Forums, books, and music: Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin, NodeBB, Bookwyrm, Bandwagon.

The closing post in the "Fediverse Beyond Mastodon" maps forums, social reading, and music, the formats that don't fit the microblog.
The Threadiverse (Fediverse's answer to Reddit): Lemmy, Kbin/Mbin and PieFed (created by Rimu - @rimu).
Forums that predate federation: NodeBB (created by @julian) rewrote its core so every new forum federates by default.
Discourse (@Discourse) ships it as an opt-in, per-category plugin.
Both were built years ago to replace phpBB and vBulletin, and both now speak ActivityPub.Social reading: BookWyrm (created by @tripofmice), a federated Goodreads where your shelves and reviews show up in a Mastodon timeline.
Music: Funkwhale (@funkwhale) - a self-hosted Grooveshark successor.
Bandwagon (created by @benpate) an online music storefront where musicians sell directly, built on the Emissary framework.
