Although I understand there are good points to #Mastodon, I am really concerned that we cannot discuss #race and #politics and other important topics without trigger warnings and what not. I loved how reading passionate threads from others on Twitter helped me understand other perspectives. I can't figure out if that is possible here, without conversation being stifled and forced to adhere to some performance of #niceness.

First thing I noticed on Mastodon is that people are nicer. And I liked it.
This reminds me of HN. Say what you will of its culture, but I'll take reasonable passive-aggressiveness any day over personal insults.
#Niceness isn't a Western social construct. All cultures probably develop norms of communication in order to not sound aggressive or rude, unless you mean it. Assholes get marginalized or confronted.
You want your message to be heard and not just in a preach to the choir.

Niceness is the set of rules us white people established and force on everyone else, allowing us to punish anyone not seen as "nice" (as in, not playing by our shitty rules).
Kindness is giving a damn about other people and acting accordingly; kindness is sometimes speaking out but also sometimes shutting up. Kindness does not force others to submit to a set of arbitrary rules that favor white people.
I don't want a nice #Mastodon, I'd like a kind one.
