Tennessee just signed into law the TRANS DATA COLLECTION bill.

  7. @Zubair123kk @EUCommission Surely you can trap the human spirit! You can even murder the body where human spirit resides and throw it into mass graves or incinerators, as was proven by a past regime in "civilized" Germany or the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia where I personally visited the mass graves with earth subsiding as corpses are decomposing and tower filled with human skulls!

I wonder whether EU is inspiring themselves by these regimes when they are creating such checklists?

"Stop the spread of disinformation" - sounds to me exactly like coming out of the mouth of the Cambodian IMO dictator Hun Sen / Hun Manet when they are IMO saying that the opposition are terrorists and IMO threating them with shooting them into pieces by a BM Grad rocket launcher, should they return from the exile!

I guess I just violated the "Be cautious of strong emotional content" EU checklist item because suppression of free speech leads to dictatorships, these lead to atrocities, and these lead to strong emotions of anger, contempt and grief, so instead of solving the root problem, suppression of free speech, we will suppress those strong emotions in people who dare to criticize these processes, as EU is suggesting!

  8. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

I am very wary of those individuals who are neither writers nor editors nor even, in some cases, readers, who feel that they have the right to apply their own moral criteria to the books in public and school libraries. I have enormous respect and admiration and love for the librarians who are rising up to protest this, because they are putting their very jobs on the line.

  12. Republicans are getting more ‘inventive’ in their attempts at voter suppression. I am assuming that they are counting on a lot of people staying away from polls in order to avoid the hassle.

I am surprised that Farage and Baddenoch have not got in on the act. Although Rees Mogg did admit that their last attempt at fixing voters backfired, it the elderly who stayed away in greater numbers.

  13. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

We think because we have words, not the other way around, and the greater our vocabulary, the greater our ability to think conceptually. The first people a dictator puts in jail are the writers, the teachers, the librarians — because these people are dangerous. They have enough vocabulary to recognize injustice and to speak out loudly about it. Let us have the courage to go on being dangerous people.

  19. Over the past two decades, the Roberts Court has pioneered and perfected the practice: #Sanewashing
—defined as “attempting to minimize or downplay a person or idea’s radicality to make it more palatable to the general public”
—It has become a prominent, if entirely underappreciated, feature of the Roberts Court.

Relying on judicial sanewashing, the Roberts Court has ERODED:
    #due #process protections,
    political #accountability,
    and civil rights,
while simultaneously #consolidating #power for itself, corporations, gun owners, Christian conservatives, and state officials who owe their political influence to heavily gerrymandered districts.

All this has been accomplished while the Roberts Court has sought to present itself as a neutral, nonpartisan institution, free from corporate interests and policy preferences and guided solely by constitutional and democratic principles.

As the Roberts Court has transformed into a #conservative policymaking body, it has maintained that it is merely fulfilling its constitutional mandate.

    The judicially sanewashed opinions of the Roberts Court haven’t been limited solely to sanewashing the law;
-- Often, they also involve extensive sanewashing of the facts too.
For example, in tandem with whitewashing the anti-racist purpose of the Reconstruction Amendments in Shelby County v. Holder,
the Roberts Court also recast former Confederate states subject to the #Voting #Rights #Act, or VRA, as aggrieved and mistreated, and in need of legal protection by the Court.

According to the sanewashed facts in Shelby County, the VRA was no longer necessary because racially discriminatory voting practices were “rare”
and the remaining sections of the statute would be sufficient to protect minority voting rights.
In the decade since the Court offered those tepid reassurances,
states formerly subject to the VRA’s preclearance requirements have passed an avalanche of discriminatory #voter #suppression laws
as the Roberts Court has simultaneously sought to further weaken the law.
🆘 The Court is now prepared to strike down the remaining vestiges of the statute it promised would remain in place to ensure voting rights remained protected.

Similarly, when sanewashing the First Amendment to recognize new speech rights by corporations to engage in unlimited political spending in #Citizens #United,
the Roberts Court tried to assure a skeptical public that dismantling decades of campaign finance regulations would strengthen the integrity of elections and allow voters to hold officials accountable.
🔥Fifteen years later, the ruling has unleashed a torrent of unregulated corporate spending in American politics,
enabling #superPACs to raise limitless funds from corporations
and undisclosed donors to exercise an outsized influence on election results.
⭐️Between 2010 and 2024, political spending by super PACs grew from $62.6 million to $4.1 billion.

Americans are so disgusted with #darkmoney in politics that an overwhelming majority supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.ERO

  25. A quotation from Jean-Paul Marat

In order to subdue his subjects, the Prince labours to blind them. Conscious of the unlawfulness of his own designs, and sensible of what he has to fear from clear-sighted men, he endeavours to deprive the people of every means of acquiring knowledge.
How many crafty devices have not Princes employed to oppose the progress of learning? Some banish science out of their dominions; others prohibit their subjects from traveling into foreign countries; others again divert the people from reflecting, by continually entertaining them with feasts and shews, or keeping up among the the spirit of gaming; and all stand up against men of spirit, who dedicate either their voices or their pen to defend the cause of liberty.

Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) French physician, political theorist, scientist, journalist

When the #military is deployed to quell overwhelmingly peaceful #protest, when elected officials of the opposing party are #arrested or handcuffed, when student #activists are jailed and deported, and when a wide range of civic institutions – non-profits, #law firms, #universities, news outlets, the arts, the civil service, #scientists – are targeted and penalised by the United States federal #government, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that our core freedoms are disappearing before our eyes – and #democracy itself is slipping away.

In any country on the cusp of #authoritarianism, the role of the #press as an engine of #scrutiny, #truth and #accountability becomes increasingly critical. At the Guardian, we see it as our job not only to report on the #suppression of dissenting voices, but to make sure those voices are heard.

Not every news organisation sees its mission this way.....

Our only financial obligation is to fund #independent journalism in perpetuity: we have no ultrarich owner, no shareholders, no corporate bosses with the power to overrule or influence our editorial decisions. Reader support is what guarantees our survival and safeguards our independence – and every penny we receive is reinvested in our work.

The Guardian’s global perspective helps contextualise and illuminate what we are experiencing in this country. That doesn’t mean we have a single viewpoint, but we do have a shared set of values. #Humanity, #curiosity and #honesty guide us, and our work is rooted in solidarity with ordinary people and hope for our shared future.

It has never been more #urgent, or more #perilous, to pursue #reporting that holds #power to account and counters the spread of #misinformation – and at the Guardian we make our #journalism #free and accessible to all.

    Marc Elias:

One of the most under reported stories in the legacy media is how many states the RNC and DOJ are suing right now to access their voter rolls. It is a frontal assault on democracy that Democracy Docket covers every day, while legacy media both-sides Trump

  34. A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

There can be nothing more utterly subversive of all that is really valuable than the suppression of honest thought. No man, worthy of the form he bears, will at the command of church or state solemnly repeat a creed his reason scorns.

  35. This is NOT healthy America. This is America being #ravaged and slowly #destroyed by #conspiracy theories, and #deliberate stifling of #information. This is #criminal #suppression by #antiscience #nutjobs. The product of a #damaged brain and drug addled mind. People running this #government don't care about the common population. They'll save themselves with their hoarded money and let us perish via deliberate acts. #Rise, America! #Oppose these #tyrants. #USPolitics

  36. A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

On every hand are the enemies of individuality and mental freedom. Custom meets us at the cradle and leaves us only at the tomb. Our first questions are answered by ignorance, and our last by superstition. We are pushed and dragged by countless hands along the beaten track, and our entire training can be summed up in the word –suppression. Our desire to have a thing or to do a thing is considered as conclusive evidence that we ought not to have it, and ought not to do it. At every turn we run against cherubim and a flaming sword guarding some entrance to the Eden of our desire. We are allowed to investigate all subjects in which we feel no particular interest, and to express the opinions of the majority with the utmost freedom. We are taught that liberty of speech should never be carried to the extent of contradicting the dead witnesses of a popular superstition. Society offers continual rewards for self-betrayal, and they are nearly all earned and claimed, and some are paid.
