    DISCUSSION

    As of 245 AM Sunday...

KEY MESSAGE 1... Scattered showers and a few strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region today as a cold front moves through the Mid-Atlantic. A Marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms with damaging wind gusts remains for eastern half of NC.

Most areas will see rainfall totals between 0.25" and 0.50", with localized areas seeing up to 0.75". This moisture is welcome, as much of Central NC remains in a severe to extreme drought. Latest model data is showing the morning starting off with a band of rain over the western Piedmont, but as the boundary pushes eastward through the day, the atmosphere is expected to become more unstable, especially in the Coastal Plain region where storms could become strong to severe.

Confidence is increasing for the window of strong to severe storms, particularly for areas along and east of the US-1 corridor. With afternoon heating maximized in the east, the potential for severe storms along and east of I-95, where the most persistent sunshine and heating are expected. This ample heating will provide the necessary energy for storms to intensify as they move toward the coast. The primary threat with these storms will be damaging wind gusts, especially during the afternoon and early evening. Behind the main line of storms, the actual cold front is expected to bring another line of showers through the evening with cooler drier air filtering in behind.

Temperatures today will be dictated by the timing of the rain; expect the northwest Piedmont to stay in the upper 60s to low 70s, while the Sandhills and Coastal Plain reach the mid-70s to low 80s. Once the front passes tonight, temperatures will drop significantly, reaching the mid-40s in the northwest to near 50 in the southeast.

From NC’s Weather Authority on FB: Turning warmer as our weather starts to change again. Happy Thursday, North Carolina! We will start the day out with some scattered fog here and there, and then some clouds. I expect partly to mostly sunny skies for most areas, but clouds will hang on longer across NE North Carolina, so we will go with more clouds compared to sunshine for a good portion of the day in these areas. Highs today will warm into the upper 70s and low/mid 80s even some upper 80s for most parts, thanks to clouds NE NC will be a litlte cooler but everyone else should be pretty warm. I can't rule out a stray shower, but most eveyone is dry today. We will turn even warmer for Friday with some spots in the 90s. Summer is not over yet!

    NEAR TERM

…Surface dewpoints should still be in the upper 60s to mid 70s for much of the day, resulting in RH values in the 40s/50s percent. The combination of temperatures around 100 degrees and RH values in the 40s percent will still result in heat index values ranging from 101 to 111 this aft/eve.

Additionally, thunderstorms are still expected to develop over central NC this aft/eve. Forecast soundings show inverted-V profiles, with moderate to strong instability (MUCAPE of 2000-3000 J/Kg off the HRRR and 2500-3500 J/Kg off the RAP). While effective shear will be in the 15-20 kt range, low-level lapse rates are forecast to be quite strong (8-8.5 C/Km). Generally expect pulse storms and multicells to be the primary mode of convection. With substantial DCAPE expected across the area, storms will be capable of producing strong/damaging wind gusts. The convection should taper off between sunset and midnight tonight. Temperatures should drop as a result of convection this aft/eve, and lows generally in the low to mid 70s are expected tonight.
