The Supreme Court has called hate speech a “menace” growing into Frankenstein’s monster, blamed it on “impotent” states, and ordered them to register suo moto FIRs. At the same time, the second most senior law officer in the country asked a Muslim petitioner from Kerala, who wanted anti-Muslim rallies in Maharashtra to be stopped, why he was targeting one community instead of looking at his own state.
