My Mother bought me the drop leaf table when I "took to housekeeping," Nana made the lamp in Senior Citizens' Ceramic Class, and Aunt Ida gave me the family chairs. I still have all of them. 1982. #conservation #conserving #conservator #antique #antiques #dropleaftable #chair #chairs #canedchair #canedchairs #ceramics #ceramic #ceramiclamp #ceramiclamps #senior #seniorcitizens #seniorcitizen #home #house #firsthome #firsthouse #Pennwood

Sharing a project that recently left my workshop after far too many months: this ceramic piece was quite challenging mentally for me, and I had huge imposter syndrome about the whole thing.
I don't like sculpting hands, so the lass with the missing digits frightened me no end (I did okay in the end). I also needed to combine aluminium mesh and putties to recreate the sash, which was a pain in the bum.

Another thing I brought along to the show was these little zines I made with information on #CollectionsCare and #metals - they're hand-written and crudely illustrated, so not the most accessible, but I wanted people to be able to take away something useful.
Not available digitally, but I'm glad people picked them up on the day!

I've #upcycled an old, knackered #thermohygrograph from a museum into a very bling doorstop. ✨
Amazing what a bonkers old contraption and some golden spray paint can do!

Happy #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek!
I'm Jenny, I'm a #neurodiverse #conservator in Wales. I like my brain. It works differently than yours in a number of ways, and that's frankly quite cool.
On a practical level it means I approach tasks differently, I often struggle with not knowing what's expected of me, and I behave outside of norms in some ways.
Anyway, shout outs to my fellow neurospicy people! This week we should remember that we're actually very awesome.

I've just landed back in the UK after a bloody lovely trip abroad. Can you guess where I've been? Clues in the alt text!

Today I'm in #Sittingbourne and I've held my first #ToyHospital session. It was really fun and a few people brought in patients or asked about treasured toys! 🏥🧸

Today I got to deliver something that's been living in my head for a while: a course on the #identification and #care of #metals in #collections! 🪙
If you came along (it was open to Welsh professionals): thank you, I hope you learned something useful to your day-to-day!
If you'd like to do something similar: get in touch, I'd love to do this again. ⚙️
Now I can briefly stop thinking obsessively about metal and corrosion products...

Happy #FindsFriday!
Today I dropped by my local museum and had a squint at their 'Into the West' display (somewhat unceremoniously in the corridor upstairs). It contains some beautiful #finds I worked on earlier this year - a delight to see!
Not sure why one case was so empty - possibly those #artefacts are back in Aberystwyth?

What's the average work day for a paintings conservator? Though no two days are alike, usually it's a mix of research, collection care, treatment, analysis...and emails.
Today is #AskaConservator Day. What other questions do you have for Kari?

I've just returned from my travels, during which I saw almost nothing of the green isle and instead worked my freelance butt off in a delightful way. 🇮🇪
I had the great joy of working on some of the #NaturalHistory #collections from the National Museum of Ireland plus delivering some training for them, so I'm all atwitter from my flying visit.
Here are some lovely photos of my #conservation adventures 🪶
@PaoloViscardi - hopefully we get to chat more next time!

‘Magical’ self-portrait was hidden for decades — until the canvas was flipped
When a conservator at a British museum removed a board at the back of a prominent Norman Cornish artwork for an upcoming exhibition, he made a “magical” discovery: On the reverse was a self-portrait by the coal miner turned celebrated artist.

Oh boy, it's been a busy few days! Last week I taught a beginners course in how to identify textiles in collections, and today I've delivered a similar training session on how to ID plastics. 🔎 🧶 🎞️
My brain feels like it might be full of ONLY knowledge about polymers and fibre types now.
If someone needs me I'll be a heap on the sofa with the doggo.

Last week I had the pleasure of installing an #exhibition at #TwoTemplePlace in #London: it's a gorgeous venue that does a show every year, completely free of charge, between January and April.
This year it's called 'The Glass Heart' and it's (you guessed it) all about #glass. It was a little nerve wracking to install, not gonna lie!
I love being a #freelance #conservator for stuff like this: I get to see some marvellous things.
Go see it if you can: https://twotempleplace.org/exhibitions/the-glass-heart/

Not your usual #conservator and not your usual conservator photo either! 📷
The other week (maybe month at this rate) I had my first ever photo shoot with a professional photographer and it was actually really fun.
Here are some of the results! Mischief, tools, and lots of yellow - a pretty good representation of me.

@thecwordpodcast As a #conservator in private practice I get to make a lot of decisions myself, which is both great and awful, but mostly great!
I can make the decision to:
✅ Use suppliers committed to sustainability (or shout at them until they are)
✅ Reduce my dependency on single use plastics or overly toxic chemicals
✅ Use public transport
✅ Reuse materials in a variety of ways
✅ Repair equipment or source it second hand rather than buying newSo I do.

Are you even a #conservator if you haven't scraped old animal glue off a ceramic for an hour this week? (Just kidding. You are.)
Here's my workbench wonder for the week: a #ceramic #bull back to his old self.
Happy weekend, folks!
