  1. It's garden planning time in our neck of the woods and I'm working on a planting list for the small rock garden I built last summer. Any suggestions or discussion of suitable plants would be welcome.

So far I have 2 small sedums to move in from a temporary location and an abundance of wild strawberry and creeping thyme all over the place.

The garden is south facing on a slope in full sun, North American climate Zone 4a, min winter temp -30C to -35C. There's a paved path on the south and west sides and a wall of the house on the east. This makes it fairly warm, and thus dry, in spite of the 80 to 100 cm of precipitation (much of that snow) it gets every year.

  2. We had our giant, out of control bird of paradise cut to the ground yesterday so it grows back healthy, already 24 hours later the stalks have grown 2-3 inches

  3. Been starting my mornings with topsoil shoveling. I'm 22 wheelbarrow loads into the 2 cubic yard driveway pile.

Turns out the first eleven were enough for my primary purpose of filling the fish pond. The rest is going to top dressing and filling low areas.

Fish are in their winter aquarium early this year while we ponder their future.

  4. Okay I did an hour and a half of chipping branches in the growing morning heat, and that's enough for me.

A good mindless task, which I needed, though I should've brought some water out with me I think. Whew.

  5. Our hedge has been fine for many years and for the first 18yrs I called it indestructible too, as this article attests, that is its nature.

The last few years it's been defying the claim of durability and we're getting spontaneous mid-summer dying of a stem at a time, really decimating our hedge.

Not much info on line about #caragana afflictions. Powder mildew and pests don't seem to be involved. Good moisture, and drainage.

  6. I tied to the tomatoes up and filled two leaf bags with small twigs and detritus out in the sun, and am sweaty enough that I think I'll skip further yard work for today.

Maybe tomorrow I'll start taking down another mangled old tree that is crowding a neighbour's tree… if I can squeeze it into my allotted hour-in-the-morning timeslot.

  7. A sweaty couple of hours this morning. My week of wood chipping for an hour every morning got rid of the pile of chippable wood, and so this morning's pre-heat-of-the-day session was removing a vigorously re-growing weed tree.

Got a big pile of branches to chip again. Ugh. And after that another round of tree-to-chipper clean up.

Meanwhile searching… maybe some carving will result too.

  8. I've been stringing along some #sourdough starter since last week, and just pushed myself to turn it into bread dough before making lunch.

Took some effort as I was already fatigued from working the wood chipper for the previous hour or so.

Anyway, made lazy-mode bread. Not sure if it'll get to bakeable by bedtime. Watch this space.

  9. Finally have the resolve & flexibility to do some yard work all week, for an hour or two each morning and of course it looks dark and threatening rain.

  10. Did an hour of wood chipping this morning. One stack of branches done, another larger stack awaits.

Then I've got some hedge trimming and a tree removal to deal with which will conveniently replace all those branches again.

  11. Whew, managed to do some overdue veg garden weeding, mound up the soil around the potato plants, and do some edging.

I need to do many hours of branches-through-the-wood-chipper too but don't want to inflict that on the neighbours on a long weekend. That thing is loud.
