I archive my photos on blu-ray m-discs.

I had a burner that I used less than 10 times a couple of years ago and found it that has died on me. I was told that there are rubber components that break if you don't use the device regularly.

Does this sound right to you guys? I don't want to buy a new drive every other year!

Bought the more expensive discs to ensure to preseverve the data for at least the next century. Here is a picture of the media before and after burning it. Of course the disc can‘t be read anymore.

What is the ~best DVD-ROM drive to read old and likely degraded media?

The Internet at large seems devoid of any information, it's all AI and linkfarming slop.

Are #MDisc worth it? If yes, what drive, disk manufacturer etc do I want? Are 100GB discs are reliable as 50 and 25 ones?
#HDD have shorter life? #LTO #tape seems less portable?

Lo mejor de todo es que es un #CD-R. La capa física en la que se graban los «pits» y «lands» (hoyos y mesetas) es un polímero (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-R#dyes) a diferencia de los #BD-R #HTL que es un metal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_recordable#HTL_(high_to_low)). Es decir, que la durabilidad del CD-R es menor.

La superfície de grabación de los #MDISC, sean DVD-R o BD-R es mineral. Aún más duradera.

Es gibt einen guten Grund, sich einen aktuellen Blu-Ray-Brenner zu besorgen, und der heißt M-Disk. Das sind Blu-Rays und auch DVDs mit einer besonderen Beschichtung in bezahlbarer Preisregion. Versprochen wird eine Haltbarkeit "wie Stein", also mindestens 1000 Jahre. Ist also eine Langzeit-Archivierung. Nicht nur gut für 'normale' Daten, sondern auch für Filme, Musik usw.

Wer auf eine eigene Speicherung verzichtet, muss schon ein sehr, sehr hohes Vertrauen in kapitalistische Firmen wie Amazon und Spotify haben, dass die noch in Jahrzehnten die eigenen Lieblingsfilme und -musikstücke vorrätig haben werden.

The Disc Duplicator M-Disc upgrade went well! Everything seems to work on a hardware level.

Next, I have to start installing and testing software:

I have a low-level USB library in Python that I got from AdaFruit that I'll be using to test the robotics codes I have in my notes.

I will have to find the instructions on installing the Lexmark Z600 driver that is supposed to work with this printer (and also understand how it works for disk printing).

And I suppose I will need some kind of python library for accessing the M-Disc burner, reading and writing media, and controlling the open/close of the disk tray from software.

Then I'll have to write the code to do the top-level control of those.

I'll first set these up to run from the command line (or the Python interactive interpreter). Ultimately, I want to be able to control it from a browser, so I can attach the duplicator to a different computer if I want to.

So after I get the low-level stuff working, I plan to create a little Flask web application. And it's a disc burner. Hence, my working project title, "Bunsen".

These parts arrived in the mail today, so I now have what I need for the M-Disc disc duplicator project. Planning to get started on that tomorrow!
