a few months ago while out thrifting i found an HD-DVD copy of A Scanner Darkly for a few bucks.
it instantly brought me back to 2007, when i was caught up in the excitement of the ability of watching HD films on my little home theatre. the blu-hddvd format wars were in full swing too, and i didn't want to buy a bum steer. so i sat on the sidelines the entire year.
what pushed me over the edge was A Scanner Darkly, which i had seen at a local indie theatre a few years earlier. i ended up buying an hd-dvd player just to watch it. i was blown away by how gorgeous it looked.
for the past few months i've collected a handful of hd-dvd movies with no real plan. i just like 'em. i didn't want to drop $100 on a used player, so i kept hunting thrift shops weekly for a deal. today i finally found one: a Toshiba HD-A2 player for $8.
A Scanner Darkly has to be one of the most beautifully animated (rotoscoped) and underrated films of the past 20 years. there's so much visual imagination that went into the world, that i always find something new each time i see it. i wish more people still talked about it. sadly, rotoscoping never really got a foothold outside of Linklater's films.

Anyone here interested in dead physical media formats?
Many probably won't remember but in the mid 2000s, there was the last "Format War" we saw in the Home Video Entertainment business - namely HD DVD from Toshiba vs. Blu-ray from Sony. While the latter succeeded, I began to collect several stuff from the first format and last weekend I was unboxing a BRAND NEW and still SEALED HD DVD Player from 2007. 😍

over a decade ago i gave away my little hd-dvd collection and replaced them all with blu-ray discs. it was a good move.
i was surprised to find myself a little wistful about the hd-dvd format this year. there was something very exciting and aspirational about the hd disc format wars of the late 2000s. trash quality streamed video wasn’t even on the horizon yet, and cinemaphiles suddenly were given new and interesting choices.
my sole regret was giving away the 5-disc collector’s edition of Blade Runner. it had 5 different cuts of the film, a 4.5 hour documentary, and tons of extras on separate discs
after many, many years of hunting thrift stores for it, i finally found it today for $5 and couldn’t be happier. i plan to pick up a used hd-dvd player - perhaps even that goofy xbox 360 addon. 😅

Watched Mission Impossible 1-3 on HD DVD this weekend, yes really. Got playback going and had them on hand. Do I recommend going to extreme lengths to figure out how to get there? Nope. Need to know specific software to get a good experience. It was good to watch them again sure but the transfers are also really dated at this point. I'm not sure the reward is worth it when blu-ray is just plug and play in many situations #retrotech #hddvd #physicalmedia #films #movies

Yo, that ship sailed off in retreat at the end of the high density ROM disc format wars.

This may be the stupidest $2 I’ve ever spent.

So I wanted to watch Shaun of the Dead tonight, so I had to fish this thing out since I only have it on HD DVD. Glad it still works & honestly it's not a bad piece of kit. If it still works in the future, I'm definitely using it for my bedroom. (My partner will have their Blu-ray player in the living room) 😂

Remember HD-DVD? 😆 This is a collector’s edition. I’m watching Blade Runner today and it’s been a while. Nerd fact: I’ve only seen this movie on laserdisc. 🤓 #physicalmedia #hddvd

Trying hard to preserve my HD DVD format collection, a format that lost to Blu-ray which had great potential but sadly didn't last long.
The Xbox 360 sold a HD DVD add on for £99 which included the HD DVD drive and King Kong on the format. I'm using this plugged in via USB on Windows to back up the discs. Mostly successful, except for this Heroes box set where disc rot has taken a grip sadly.
