Improving Linux On Desktop, day 4. Regressions fixing.
While setting up ZFS (see Day 1-3), introduced `nomodeset` into kernel options for debug. Turns out, nomodeset breaks USB-C dock hotplug if the dock is plugged while initramfs is booting up - replugged, it won't be seen. Drop `nomodeset` and it works as it did. Whoa. #Linux #LinuxOnDesktop

@nixCraft that's a really good idea - for #LinuxOnDesktop. Microsoft's biggest strength was it's WIn32 ABI compatibility - down to Win95. They are now seemingly willing to sacrifice this, in the first time in 30 years. Which means, there's a significant chance for #Proton / #Wine to be more compatible than Windows itself. Good riddance!

Colleague switches from Windows and installs #Linux #MINT with #Cinnamon.

Only /home (separate partition) is encrypted, not the root partition (with caches, ...). I'd say that's unnecessarily insecure.

Swap partition is a joke: 16GB RAM and 2GB of swap partition -> no hibernate is possible OOTB. 🤷

Enabling hibernate via an additional swap file (and tedious manual effort) is possible but the UI doesn't show any option for using hibernate as user. Meanwhile this works: sudo systemctl hibernate -i

I'd say it's far from being a beginner-friendly choice for a linux distribution. 😔

He's about to throw away Mint and try something else instead.

(My current recommendation would be Debian 13 Trixie with Gnome or Xubuntu although I'm no particular distro expert and at least (X)Ubuntu did the same swap size mistake.)

#Microsoft has finally annoyed me enough with this #Copilot and #Recall bullshit to overcome my inertia around moving off #Windows on my daily-driver laptop (#Lenovo #Thinkpad T14s).

Biggest concern is support for my Lenovo Thinkpad Hybrid USB-C dock. I'm not using anything unusual with it - just monitor, custom keyboard, wireless mouse. But I definitely need that to work under whatever #OS I switch to!

My primary apps are Firefox, LibreOffice, PuTTY, and file explorer to access our NAS via SMB. Others include Audacity, Foxit, Notepad++ - all generally available on #Linux. So I'm leaning in that direction - #FreeBSD also seems appealing, but I worry about how much tweaking I'd have to do to get things working.

Any distro suggestions? Anyone successfully using Linux with a Thinkpad dock?
