  1. Reading Slumps Are Swamps

I’m at a stage where nothing sticks. Perhaps it’s summer lethargy. Or I simply overworked myself and burned out. Like a candle on a dark, dark night. Drip, drip, drip, the energy is dimmer. And there’s an ick for everything. Moving. Sitting. Thinking. It probably sounds worse than it is, really. But it’s just annoying.

Recently, I started watching A Bona Fide Killer, and episode 8 gave me emotional whiplash. I followed Yoo Bona deal with a similar state to what I’m currently experiencing—wasting away on a couch in the snowy mountains. I say similar because unlike her, firstly, I’m not in the snowy mountains, and secondly, I do find myself thorn between two worlds: laying around all day, doing absolutely nothing and simply recharging, or immersing myself in all these little projects I stacked in the back-pocket of my mind.

It’s like Russian Roulette. Doing nothing feels like a loss. Doing something costs energy I need to build up. Two opposites. I basically feel like Xiaohu Dan in this frame. Or another from episode 13 probably (?), where he was faced with two difficult choices.

Anyway, since I didn’t have a trusty minister to hand the choice over to, my only choice was to stubbornly move forward. So, my next logical step was to search for a cure on my bookshelves. Sit and read. Nothing more.

But that didn’t work as well as I expected either. Words kept bouncing right over my head, almost mockingly: “Thought you could catch us? Think again!”

I took a break. Went back again. Rejected.

    I picked up another book.

    Same story.

And to top it all off, two books I promised to read and review looked at me with eyes of longing. Well, in my imagination, at least. I mentioned a while ago how I accepted two stories for review: one with K-drama vibes, and another one with Sakura blossoms covering a detective’s tracks. Both sounded exciting. But the problem, as Taylor Swift puts it, is me. Or perhaps the timing is not yet right.

Either way, I hope to return to both of them soon (I’ll definitely need to start rereading the previous chapters) and share an impression. All I need is for this reading slump ghost to go away. It makes me feel like I’m trying to cross through a swamp. The mud coils around my legs in tendrils, pulling me down, trying to keep me trapped in the same spot over and over again. And yet, I keep trying to push through.

After a month’s break, I picked up another book, one I tried reading somewhere in the first few months of the year and abandoned yet again on a shelf. A Sorcery of Thorns. It’s still a bit of a battle as words keep skipping rope over my head, but at least I’m making progress. Within this past week, I managed to read a hundred pages. Although I still had to revisit some, as they didn’t quite register into my brain.

Perhaps I need a change of scenery. I’m likely caught in life’s daily grind.

    After all…

“It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.”

  2. Last week I tried.

I tried to be there and to get things done. Between my youngest being part of the Special Olympics locally and a doctor's appointment, I did my best to be out and about with family. A major cleaning day and I'm now on day three of recovery. With chronic illness you don't get the unlimited reserve. I barely have the energy to even sit and research, let alone a short story or bits of writing. Thankfully, today I am getting to the point where I have more energy. So the plan is to get back to […]

  4. As soon as I am legally able to, I am changing my name from Dmytro to Dima.

"Dmytro" is basically a document-only name. Growing up, it was only ever used by strict teachers. Everyone else has called me Dima since birth. But now, this legal name essentially functions as a deadname that follows me everywhere. It is completely unpronounceable and unreadable for most people I interact with.

The resulting typos in emails and chats are endless - I regularly get addressed as Dymi, Demi, Dymo, or Dema because people have no idea how to spell my actual name based on the legal one. It is exhausting to constantly explain the mechanics of Slavic name shortening, and having to reassure colleagues that no, calling me Dima is not rude or overly informal.

It just creates an unnecessary daily social tax and constant friction.

  6. Today was a whirlwind of emotions. It started with a lingering sense of unease from a vivid nightmare that left me feeling vulnerable and scared. I've dealt with nightmares throughout my life, and while they have become less frequent over the years, they still occasionally catch me off guard. These dreams often revolve around past experiences or completely random scenarios, leaving a lasting impression on my mind.

Despite the rocky start, I went about my day as planned. I attended a church service, which was enjoyable until the social gathering afterward. I struggled to connect with the humor and conversations, which left me feeling out of place. It was a reminder of how challenging social interactions are for me.

On a brighter note, I received communication from the university regarding my application to resume my studies in neuroscience. The request to explain my previous withdrawal caused some anxiety but I managed to articulate my reasons and the personal growth I've experienced since then. My GP offered to write a letter on my behalf, which was a surprise. I have a music rehearsal tomorrow, and although some changes in the music are causing a bit of anxiety, I'm determined to prepare for my solo performance on Sunday. #LifeUpdates #Music #dreams

  7. Life has been quite the whirlwind and yet at the same time has felt like we are in limbo. We are busy but we are also trying to sell, buy, and move to a new house. We are not sure how our life is going to play out in the next month or even the next couple of weeks!

One reassurance we have is that things usually resolve themselves in the end, especially when we are doing the best we can to do what is right.

We just gotta ride the storm in the meantime 😂⛈️🌪️🌀

  8. 5) Switched to AT&T Fiber internet a while back (think I already posted that) but combined with the (Google) Nest Wifi Pro, my network is much better!

    6) Drove to Colorado for Christmas vacation stuff. Was an interesting time.

    7) Baby is in daycare now!

    8) Got the Bullet Journal, Journal. Gonna organize my life a bit!

    9) Found a therapist that happens to not have any sort of copay for me, and this is honestly great.

    10) Uhhhhhh.....number 10 because I wanted to end on 10.
