Volunteered at a trans name change fair at the Boston Public Library last night. I adore these fairs. People come in so excited for their new names. I always imagine the hours of pondering and feel checks that went into the choice.
I did a bunch of notarizations, including one woman who was so uncomfortable with her previous name/appearance that when I asked to see her ID, she literally handed it to me front side down so she didn't have to look at it. She seemed sad that this was the name that got notarized (in the US at least, the notary record book has the old name in it — at signing time, the new name isn't technically legal yet), so I invoked the "if you know a trans person's former name, no you don't" rule and showed her my taped-up record book. State law says I have to keep a record of all notarizations. It doesn't say that I can't put opaque Post-It tape over the deadnames. Technically removable, so within the letter of the law, but completely unreadable otherwise.

(4/6) Govt also announced that the country's 3-letter code is changing from NRU for " #Nauru" to NRO for " #Naoero". However, world authority on country codes #ISO hasn't yet published such a change (it's normal for this to take months): https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:code:3166:NR

(3/6) UN web page says #Nauru "informed the United Nations" of name change to #Naoero on June 26 (https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states/naoero), but UN database seems to say it received notice July 6, for name change effective June 26 (https://unterm.un.org/unterm2/en/view/d9b9e1d7-f1fa-4b1d-a396-b686c5c27806)

🎉 Oh wow, a Brazilian musician-turned-software-engineer/former climate scientist/webmaster/novelist/whatever has changed his name! 🌍 Who knew that sharing a historical tidbit about an emperor with a name as long as a CVS receipt could be this riveting? 📜 Spoiler: his "new" name still sounds like it's auditioning for a #telenovela. 🙄

As soon as I am legally able to, I am changing my name from Dmytro to Dima.
"Dmytro" is basically a document-only name. Growing up, it was only ever used by strict teachers. Everyone else has called me Dima since birth. But now, this legal name essentially functions as a deadname that follows me everywhere. It is completely unpronounceable and unreadable for most people I interact with.
The resulting typos in emails and chats are endless - I regularly get addressed as Dymi, Demi, Dymo, or Dema because people have no idea how to spell my actual name based on the legal one. It is exhausting to constantly explain the mechanics of Slavic name shortening, and having to reassure colleagues that no, calling me Dima is not rude or overly informal.
It just creates an unnecessary daily social tax and constant friction.

Today is my 10th Bee day! 🐝
On this day in 2016, Stacie Bee was born. Best decision ever.
My legal name change was effective along with my divorce and the universe welcomed Stacie Bee. I changed everything except my first name.
💟🐝💟

anyone here changed your name (by deed poll or otherwise) because you wanted to (as opposed to as a result of marriage, divorce, etc.)?
i'm *thisclose* to ditching my father's surname for my mum's & i just want an idea whether there are things that i might not have considered which i may regret.

#HotTake: changing your name is one of the highest forms of self-expression, including using multiple names, and anyone should be able to change their name at any time for any reason, even if you think the name and/or reason is stupid, and even if the name is "Manchester United".
By the 2100s, wacky names like "Tennesee Tuxedo", "Dicksucker Jones", and "Zero" will be normalized and accepted, because people will move on from name-authoritarianism and embrace name-freedom along with morphological-freedom and clothing-freedom.
(TLDR: the 2120s will be full of naked furries with funny names, that is my #prediction 😎 )

Naming a school after someone is not about preserving history, which is permanent and unchangeable, it is a mark of honour.
Of the billions of people who have lived in the world, a tiny tiny fraction have things named after them. It is, when yiu really think of it, a gigantic honour.
But honour is always subjective and current, so if it no longer seems the person is honourable based on newly discovered or understood history then the proper thing to do is remove the honour.
That becomes part of the history which must be preserved and told.
Racist, violent, colonialists do not deserve to be honoured.
