Been looking into plain text accounting recently, there are a couple command line based apps that support plain text based accounting... and this resources is excellent:
https://plaintextaccounting.org
That said I've never until now found way to be able to automatically import bank transactions UNTIL NOW.
The BeanHub tool sent me down a rabbit hole] [1] and while they've done excellent work, paying their full USD $15/month [for access to just get their bank data direct connect feature does not add up.
But looks like we can go to the source folks, BeanHub uses something called Plaid to get the bank data from 140+ banks worldwide.
And multiple folks have worked out a direct Plaid to Plain Text Accounting tools.

US based ledger-cli users: when working with an accountant for tax filing, how do you usually work with them & send them your ledger? CSV output and balances? Something else? #ledgercli #accounting

After bouncing around ideas and several experiments, I've decided to launch a new project with the goal of creating CLI tooling that facilitates receipt handling for #plaintextaccounting workflows. LLM based OCR and data extraction has improved to the point that I believe it will be possible to make bulk data extraction useful. If you have ideas, want to contribute, or just want to follow along jump in:

@nobodyinperson I'm asking you first because involving #gitannex would be high on my priority list. Really this wouldn't need to be #hledger specific as it could just as well be paired with #ledgercli or #beancount either directly or via CSV or whatever. I'm not a huge GitLab fan these days but can do it if you prefer. Codeberg seems more aligned or GitHub having the advantage of contributor pool. Thoughts?

If you handle your #plaintextaccounting using either #vim or #neovim based on either #ledgercli or #hledger then be sure to update your plugins! The vim-ledger plugin got some much needed love in the last 48 hours with a lot of rough edges smoothed over and a few new features.
https://github.com/ledger/vim-ledger/releases/tag/v1.3.0
If you're a #beancount peep then carry on as before. If you do #bookkeeping without PTA at all then what are you even waiting for? If you use #emacs then this post is in another castle.

For those of you who are into #PlainTextAccounting: Which software are you using and why?
I'd like to finally start personal accounting again. I stopped when #YNAB became SaaS. YNAB's "envelope budgeting" worked really well for me, and I'd like to get back to a similar workflow. (Or, if you think you know something superior, let me know!)
I'm very open to comments and suggestions here, but it has to be open source software.

https://joyful.com/Lot+tracking+in+PTA
Tracking investment lots is often necessary to calculate capital gains accurately and to comply with tax law. It's a tricky, increasingly widespread bookkeeping need. This page aims to be a useful guide to the topic, for PTA users and PTA developers.

I do the books of our tiny, tiny company. Because it's so small, I can get away with using #ledgercli!
What an absolute delight it is :D One hour every month, well spent!

I biked 4,042 km in 2023. 44.1% of that was for recreation; 55.9% was for utility (with 32.0% for my commute). Almost all of this was on my Raleigh Record Ace.
I spent $417.37 on #cycling, including building new bike stands for my office. That's $0.103/km, or $0.185/km if you only count utility cycling. Compare to about $0.40/km driving!
I used #ledgercli to track distances and expenses, and #gnuplot for the graph.

Spent some time wrestling with #cPlusPlus and #debugging in #gdb to give #ledgerCLI the ability to cope with the UK's mad tax year. I blame Henry VIII 👑

Can you ever get kind of excited about personal finance management/bookkeeping? It turns out yes.
After a quick read on YNAB, I think I see what people use [virtual transactions] for now in #hledger and #ledgercli
Interesting, but I don't think I'll use it, I don't need pre-defined budgeting, I will use the regular hledger budgeting for recuring monthly expenses starting next month, though.
-
I'm clearly biased, but as I see it #hledger is #ledgercli fleshed out and made production-ready.
-
What's the state of the art in bookkeeping with #ledgercli? Do people tend to use ledger-cli directly? Are there frontends that you'd recommend or warn against?
What are good sources to look at, particularly for best practices? I found https://rolfschr.github.io/gswl-book/latest.html, which looks great and comprehensive – anything else?

I’ve been using #ctags with #ledger for a couple months now. It’s been a complete game changer to update my journal with fast completions and code navigation. It works out of the box with my editor of choice #neovim/#vim and also with other editors, sometimes with a plugin (#emacs, #vscode…).
I’m now sharing the ctags configuration, as this could benefit others: https://cj.rs/ledger-ctags/
Please let me know if you have issues or if some things are unclear!
