  1. I saw it shut down a few weeks back and I was curious but I assumed that it shut down due to all of the prostitution and the seemingly non-stop police presence. 🤷‍♂️

"The La Quinta hotel just south of the Bayshore Mall in Glendale closed in mid July after its lodging license was revoked due to fire safety concerns."

  2. History of Storms in the Coachella Valley

The History of Storms in the Coachella Valley:

Flanked by the steep San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountain ranges, the Coachella Valley serves as a natural catchment basin, where rapid runoff regularly transforms dry desert washes into destructive flood corridors between Palm Springs and Indio.

    The 1930s: Foundational Deluges –

March 1938: The historic “Great Flood of 1938” sent massive torrents down the Whitewater River basin, inundating Palm Springs roads, stranding low-desert agricultural hubs in Indio, and washing out railway tracks and telegraph lines.

September 1939: The 1939 California tropical storm (El Cordonazo) dumped record-breaking precipitation across the desert floor within hours. The back-to-back destruction of 1938 and 1939 spurred federal and local investment in major levees and the engineered Coachella Valley Stormwater Channel.

The 1970s: Tropical Storm Destabilization –

Tropical Storm Kathleen (September 1976): One of the most catastrophic storm events in modern valley history. Kathleen delivered over a foot of rain to the surrounding mountains, unleashing massive debris flows through Palm Desert, catastrophic flooding in Cathedral City washes, and collapsing sections of Interstate 10, isolating the valley for days.

Tropical Storm Doreen (August 1977): Following Kathleen just a year later, Doreen dumped up to 4 inches of rain on the valley floor, re-flooding agricultural lands around Indio and Coachella and inflicting heavy structural damage on newly developed subdivisions.

1980s–1990s: Strong El Niño Cycles –

1982–1983 & 1997–1998 Seasons: Successive “Super El Niño” winters brought prolonged atmospheric moisture rather than isolated summer monsoons. Saturated ground and recurring winter storms repeatedly compromised major arterial wash crossings—such as Gene Autry Trail, Indian Canyon Drive, and Vista Chino—severing north-south transit across the upper valley.

    Modern Events:

Atmospheric Rivers and Tropical Systems –

Valentine’s Day Storm (February 2019): An atmospheric river dropped nearly 4 inches of rain in Palm Springs and 10 inches in the San Jacinto Mountains in 24 hours, washing out mountain highways (Routes 74 and 243) and flooding low-lying neighborhoods across the central valley.

Tropical Storm Hilary (August 2023): Produced the valley’s wettest day on record, dumping more than a year’s average rainfall in under 24 hours. Catastrophic mud and debris flows buried homes in Cathedral City, severed I-10, breached drainage channels, and left extensive municipal infrastructure underwater from Palm Springs to the East Valley.

  5. Christmas in the desert: warm 70 degree afternoons, nearby palm tree oasis, apricot-colored sunsets, and fresh citrus and dates to eat. Just the opposite of the traditional snowy Xmas card images but still special.

  7. Recently I got asked to do the live stream of the "El Gato" Classic, made possible by S1 Helmet Co. For those unfamiliar, the event is a gathering of skateboarders from the past 4 generations and the best of the future.
It was a great time, hanging out with so many of my skate "family" and interviewing Dressen, Mountain, Cab & many of the Legends of our sport/lifestyle!
