  1. Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?

We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.

Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at calbike.org/events/webinar-ser or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.

If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2

  13. See updates to Bike Buzz for more on road maintenance, i.e., bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-win.

What to do when you come upon a rockslide (or other debris) that interferes with biking the shoulder of a road (and you normally bike the shoulder of that road, because motor vehicles travel at high speeds in the main travel lanes)?

In California, if it’s a state highway, report it to California Department of Transportation / #Caltrans: csr.dot.ca.gov/.

If not a state highway (not a maintenance responsibility of Caltrans), see where to report in Monterey County, : bikemonterey.org/where-to-repo.

  14. Shortly after 10 a.m., the California Highway Patrol announced on X that #Highway101 is #closed from Winchester in Goleta to State Route 1
“due to debris flow and flooding for an unknown duration.”
#CHP advises motorists to use Highway 154 as an alternate route
and to drive slow and travel safe, warning that conditions may change rapidly.

In its own post at 10:35 a.m., #Caltrans clarified that
👉 Highway 101 is closed in both directions due to what it describes as “a series of mudslides” near #Goleta.

Caltrans crews are on site and directing southbound travelers on the 101 off at the junction with Hwy. 1 north of #Gaviota,
while northbound travelers are being directed off at #Winchester Canyon.
⭐️“No estimate for reopening,” Caltrans said.
According to Caltrans, Highway 1 near #Orcutt is also closed in both directions due to flooding between Solomon Road and Black Road.
There is no estimate for reopening in that case either

  15. "California Department of Transportation, known as #Caltrans, said that the state had spent more than $370 million on fixing the #highway after #ExtremeWeather events in the past seven years….Building the road on unstable terrain took ingenuity. Fixing it in a world being rocked by #ClimateChange may take even more….There are more than 1,500 active slide areas in Big Sur.” nytimes.com/2025/05/23/us/paci

  16. So tempting to go for a Christmas Eve bike ride on 68 while the road is free of cars! Our favorite memories of CA SR 68 are the rare times it’s been car-free and quiet (e.g., past flooding that broke off shoulders). We’ll be a good girl (hear that, Santa?) and restrain ourselves and stay clear of whatever the workers are doing on SR 68 this Christmas Eve. And if we’re lucky, one thing they’re doing while out there is following up on our Dec 20 report to #Caltrans of need to clean up sharp debris in bike lane, apparently from a motor vehicle collision.

  17. I know agencies like #CalTrans plan their lane closures WELL in advance. And yet somehow we still, in the 21st century, can’t seem to get timely closure reports into our MAPS. Why? We get speed trap warnings. We get debris warnings. These conditions vary by the hour sometimes.

    Just annoying.

  18. #Lawyers Andrea Henson and longtime #Berkeley #homelessness advocate Osha Neumann both #arrested by #CHP while defending indigent clients as #GovNewsom sicced #Caltrans in to remove residents from an industrial #WestOakland property. After #SCOTUS case sided with removing #homeless from #PublicProperty in #Oregon, #California Gov issued an #ExecutiveOrder last month, telling CA cities & counties to “move urgently to address dangerous #encampments while supporting and assisting the individuals living in them."

  19. Caltrans will again close the Posey Tube, which connects outgoing traffic from Alameda to Oakland, overnight for maintenance work next Monday through Wednesday nights, July 29-31. The Webster Tube, which brings traffic into Alameda from Oakland, will remain open as usual.

  20. The Mupu Landslide extends by 110 minutes the RT commute for farmworkers and domestic helpers living in the largely Latino town of Santa Paula who work in the tony Bezos/Musk-riven town of #Ojai.

A 2018 landslide in #Montecito, home of Harry and Meghan, Oprah et al, disappeared, at least for cars, in about two months.

Why is Mupu still fully blocked after five months?

Caltrans threatened this week to close the single pedestrian work-around because it's been vandalized. I wonder whether there should be more oversight, or actual progress to keep those willing to risk their criminal records from wreaking havoc.

"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.
