  5. Seriously, y'all, I checked the date to make sure this wasn't an old April Fools joke. This is the stupidest shit.

Build the damn trains already. They work now, and they work well. Run them into the city centers and watch people lose their minds how great they are.

  6. Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?

We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.

Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at calbike.org/events/webinar-ser or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.

If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2

  9. It's almost time. The Oakland Alameda Access Project begins on Monday, March 2, and will continue into 2029. Ken Der shares important project updates, including full overnight Webster Tube closures instead of continuous daytime one-lane closures. alamedapost.com/news/caltrans-

  10. OK Caltrans just released the Interstate 980 transformation report and they recommend the remove option going forward. Wow. Actually listening to community and doing the right thing.

  12. "They looked like they were watching their kid ride a bicycle for the first time.

“They’ve come in way under budget—somewhere in the $60 million range with an $82 million budget.

“'We’re keeping the contract open because we anticipate there will be storms over the next few months.'

"But today, we celebrate the reunification of the #BigSur community, and the return of connectivity along one of the most iconic [#highways] in the world.”—Katie Rodriguez , #MontereyCountyNow

  13. See updates to Bike Buzz for more on road maintenance, i.e., bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-win.

What to do when you come upon a rockslide (or other debris) that interferes with biking the shoulder of a road (and you normally bike the shoulder of that road, because motor vehicles travel at high speeds in the main travel lanes)?

In California, if it’s a state highway, report it to California Department of Transportation / #Caltrans: csr.dot.ca.gov/.

If not a state highway (not a maintenance responsibility of Caltrans), see where to report in Monterey County, : bikemonterey.org/where-to-repo.

  14. Happy to be able to report that #Caltrans area Superintendent and Tree Supervisor got that tree out of the CA SR 68 shoulder promptly!

  15. Shortly after 10 a.m., the California Highway Patrol announced on X that #Highway101 is #closed from Winchester in Goleta to State Route 1
“due to debris flow and flooding for an unknown duration.”
#CHP advises motorists to use Highway 154 as an alternate route
and to drive slow and travel safe, warning that conditions may change rapidly.

In its own post at 10:35 a.m., #Caltrans clarified that
👉 Highway 101 is closed in both directions due to what it describes as “a series of mudslides” near #Goleta.

Caltrans crews are on site and directing southbound travelers on the 101 off at the junction with Hwy. 1 north of #Gaviota,
while northbound travelers are being directed off at #Winchester Canyon.
⭐️“No estimate for reopening,” Caltrans said.
According to Caltrans, Highway 1 near #Orcutt is also closed in both directions due to flooding between Solomon Road and Black Road.
There is no estimate for reopening in that case either

  16. Might not look like much, but when you’re trying to avoid a punctured bicycle tire by striving to dodge sharp debris on a road—while also trying to avoid being hit by a motor vehicle—it’s a lot!

We reported this—and other debris— directly to #Caltrans / California Department of Transportation, District 5 office. It’s still there today, as is other sharp debris we reported at same time. If you bike CA SR 68 / Highway 68, or other California highways, please submit a report to Caltrans when you come upon such road hazards. csr.dot.ca.gov/
