  1. To get an idea of how the current version of Zita-AT1 sounds like, I did a live performance with it at LAC2017 in Saint Etienne.

Fons did mention that Zita-AT2 probably has somewhat higher latency.

  2. Can't wait for Zita-AT2 to come out! The demos were just very impressive. Fons used Will Godfrey's isolated voice from one of his songs and ran it through Zita-AT2 to showcase its possibilities. For this version Fons used a completely different approach because he wanted to release a version that maintains formants.

Let's see if I can find the original score somewhere.

  3. For the record, #LAC2025 is NOT sponsored by VLC even though it might look like it.

  4. "The usual suspects will turn this into a LV2 plugin"

Quote of the day by Fons Adriaensen regarding his tape emulation project as an answer to the question if any samples were available.

  5. So would it be an idea to have the L refer to Libre instead of Linux? So a Libre Audio Conference, open to everyone who wants to submit a talk, presentation, workshop or performance about or created with open source audio software?

  6. Yesterday we had a small discussion about the future of the Linux Audio Conference. Two main questions arose:
    - Anybody willing to organize any possible next edition?
    - Should we impose any restrictions on what could be submitted?

Especially the second question spurred some debate because it touches a broader underlying sentiment: should the L in LAC represent more than just Linux?

  7. During Giso Grimm's talk about OVBox he mentioned that he had similar issues when using a newer kernel on a Raspberry Pi 4 and a Focusrite USB interface. Maybe enabling implicit feedback would help in his case too so hopefully we can take a look at that some time during the conference.

  8. One thing that changed throughout the kernel development cycle is the way USB audio interfaces are being handled. Somewhere along the line an esoteric setting called implicit feedback was introduced and by default it's disabled. I ran into issues myself (see autostatic.com/tag/ideapad/), I couldn't do proper low latency stuff. But when I enabled implicit feedback the dropouts were gone and now I can go as low as 32 frames.

  9. The floor is yours @thisven ! I really like the angle of the talk, fits the conference very well. Architectural challenges when doing open source projects from an academic point of view. Great subject and well presented. Hats off sir!

  10. Oh wow, learned a lot from Robin's workshop, very inspiring. I'm definitely going to dive into Lua scripting to streamline my Ardour workflow.

  11. We like to apologize to the #INSA students we disturbed with our singing and playing. We were unaware that there were people studying close to us. Thanks for notifying us!

  12. C'est parti pour la #LAC2025.
Workshop de @x42 dans quelques minutes 👍

  13. Now it's Fernando's and Nils' (CCRMA) turn. In my opinion this should have been the keynote. It's about Linux, audio (and video), the ongoing battle with hardware vendors, looking for solutions and explaining their journey.

And it's being presented on a Linux machine.

  14. The banquet was awesome. It was great to see everyone again and we had a good time with Auvergne style burgers served with local beer from the Auvergne too.

edit: ping @LaQuadrature since you cover and fight algorithmic surveillance (kudos)

    edit2:
After getting in touch with people close to orga the paper reviewers raised no red flags and speech was scheduled based on reviewers greenlight. Apparently a casting problem due to holes in review process (no see edit 3). will try to discuss a bit about this.

edit3: after "on site" discussion with orgas and people here

    • some people complained during the event and were not ok with this paper content. The complaints were done backstage to the orgas. No one took the mic or publicly said anything during the talk

    • there is no official organising committee so this mean no code of conduct or ethical chart for the event (this have not changed the issue)

    • there was a round of public debate where people got to tell their opinion on the subject of rejecting similar papers for later editions.

All the people who spoke before me agreed that

refusing this paper would assimilate to censure or would make the event political

I strongly reject this position, the paper itself is deeply political. Accepting it or not is political. By accepting it you take a stance.

There was the recurring argument that

accepting such papers would at least open doors for public debate

    I strongly reject this position.
Nobody dared to criticise the paper publicly.
All the complaints were done backstage.
There was no contradictory voice raised despite concerns.

I took the mic to say that this ideal of public debate is not materialising in reality. That those presentations will never have contradictory argument thrown at them and will only be met with silence.
That publicly speaking to oppose something like this is hard. Even more in front of a small academic community like this one. In the end they will give a tribute to rancid political view and nobody will dare to criticise it upfront. Having to raise your voice in front of your peers and people who hold key academic positions is not something everyone is ready to do. That is was hard for me to come here and do it.

One younger participant spoke about being against fascism and that the content of the paper was ethically and morally opposed to his values. Only to say that he still was okay with showing the paper to his students. We had a friendly chat where I asked how transparent he was about his view with his students. He told me that he was vocal about it. Nice and friendly chat, I appreciated it.

In the end my remarks felt in deaf hears.
Organisers sided with the ones in favour of paper acceptance citing the "apolitical" stance that many of us know.
This whole exchange, while being friendly, is certainly telling me things about this academic world.

  16. And stuck at Rotterdam station... My transfer is delayed by over an hour but I can take the first next train which departs half an hour later. And I had half an hour to switch trains in Brussels...

So now I have to change my tickets in Brussels, first the one to Paris Nord but then also the one from Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part Dieu.

Oh well, at least I have my favorite muesli buns.

  17. Looking at my #rtcirqus project. I think I just found how I could fix finding the right IRQ for USB interfaces. I've set myself a small but doable goal for this project: publish an initial release before #LAC2025.
