Bit of a landmark here in public funding for local news - worth clicking through to read about other innovative funding mechanisms being explored in the US as well. Lots to learn for the UK context.

There's a lot of smoke and mirrors around so-called 'AI' tech and the impact it's having on reporting. The new report from FullFact is essential reading if you're looking to understand the new information landscape.

Very informative update from @impress_org on developments in SLAPP legislation - legislators would be wise to consider the "physical, emotional, and mental toll" on journalists of being served a SLAPP, as Dr Coe advises here.

Get the lowdown on our contribution to the Media Democracy Festival, the progress of the #MediaBill and an excellent session on funding indie journalism in our March update.

Ofcom's censure of GB News is slow in coming, but not surprising. Still no consequences for the broadcaster at this stage - it remains to be seen whether they change their practices. More likely they will continue to test the boundaries of a reluctant regulator.
-
Pretty damning analysis of the media regulator here - from two former #Ofcom insiders, no less. Comparisons to how Russia Today and other foreign broadcasters have been regulated compared to #GBNews are particularly telling.

The BBC's announcement of its new music stations so soon after making drastic cuts to local radio clearly reflects a shift in priorities towards centralisation and one-size-fits-all content

The government claimed this week that its #MediaBill will 'protect public interest journalism'. A smokescreen as usual - the Media Reform Coalition have the lowdown.

Upsetting but predictable news coming out of Reach PLC this week - less than a month after they confirmed their operating profit for the year is £95 mill approx. Solidarity with all those whose livelihoods are at risk.

Interesting reading here about the trial stage of Ping, a new platform connecting hyperlocal journalism to regional publishers. Would be even more interesting to know which regional publishers are using the scheme...

Very timely update to one of the most useful reports going for those interested in UK media. The addition of a look at big tech's role is very welcome - excellent and essential.

Campaigners warned of unintended consequences of the maintream press' loophole in the #OnlineSafetyBill - and they're already biting. Russell Brand's 'Rumble' acting as a certified news source? So much for tackling fake news.

Our September update looks at recent developments with the Media Bill, our growing links with trade unions, and some exciting developments in large scale funding for independent journalism. Take a look 👀

Just when we think nothing the Mail does could shock us any more... Lester Holloway calls out this "bizarre and sinister ghost-writing Blackfacing" - an apt choice of descriptors. Truly a mind-boggling scandal.

This is a major blow for the S*n - and its timing calls into even greater question the editorial decisions made around the Huw Edwards story recently. Slowly, slowly, the noose might be tightening around Murdoch...

This is your regular reminder that right-wing media owners are not out here to serve the public, or to hold banks to account, however many TV spots Farage gets about his life admin grumbles.
-
Important, if unsurprising, research here from Hacked Off. The Wootton saga is a picture-perfect case study of the total lack of concern for morality, legality and journalistic standards on the part of GBNews - and the complicity of the mainstream press.
-
Not content with being so matey with the mainstream press, now the Tories are making their own newspapers too! But it seems they forgot to put their name on them... Check out the WhoTargetsMe newsletter for more great research on political ads.

Pride month is over, but the need for LGBTQ+ representation in media isn't going anywhere. This is an excellent look at the complexities of media attitudes to queer lives in an increasingly LGBTQ-phobic anglophone world.

This excellent initiative from PINF launched yesterday - a map of UK local news providers. Still in beta and partially incomplete, but an excellent resource nonetheless. Worth a bookmark!
