Jobs Under Threat at Nottingham University
I saw this picture on a LinkedIn post from a former member of staff in Physics at Nottingham University:
It shows a notieboard in the foyer of the Physics Building, which houses the School of Physics & Astronomy. Earlier this week members of staff received letters informing them that their jobs are “at risk of redundancy”. As an act of solidarity the staff members concerned showed posted their letters publicly. I don’t know the names of the people who have received these letters – and if I did I wouldn’t share them here – but there are 17 letters.
I also know that the undergraduate course in Mathematical Physics, taught jointly with the School of Mathematics, has been suspended and will not admit any students. I taught on this course for many years when I was at Nottingham University (from 1999 to 2007).
The threat of redundancy is not specific to Physics. It seems almost 2,700 individuals across the University have received such notices and the University is attempting to cut 600 positions. Not all those in receipt of an “at risk” letter will actually be made redundant, but the intention is clearly to scare people into leaving in order to save on redundancy payments.

The background to this disaster is explained here. In summary, the University’s current financial meltdown is caused by the actions of the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Prof. Shearer West,, who presided over the hare-brained decision to purchase a large new campus. None of the “at risk” staff is at fault., but they will have to bear the burden of management ineptitude. You would think that the people responsible for this fiasco would be held to account and pay at least some of the price for their incompetence. But no. Prof. Shearer West left her post in 2024 to take up the position of Vice-Chancelor at the University of Leeds on a salary of more than £330K, leaving others to clean up the mess.
I fear more such news is coming. The UK Higher Education sector is shrinking rapidly. Nottingham University won’t be the last.

In response to the ongoing wave of layoffs, redundancies and studio closures across the UK games sector, the Scottish Games Network (SGN) is today opening its Hello World! Startup Summit to industry professionals currently affected.
The event, taking place on March 2nd at the University of Glasgow ARC, has already seen over 100 registrations from aspiring founders and students from across Scotland. SGN is now allocating a dedicated number of spaces for mid-career and senior developers impacted by the industry’s recent volatility, offering them the commercial scaffolding required to pivot from employees to studio owners.
Building the New Founders of 2026 – and Beyond
The summit is built on the principle of the Honest Architect – a focus on the hard business logic, funding realities, and market validation tools needed to build sustainable companies in a challenging global games market.
“The current industry disruption is a tragedy for individuals, but it is also a massive displacement of world-class talent,” says Brian Baglow, Director of the Scottish Games Network. “We don’t want that talent to leave the sector, or Scotland. We want to equip them to build their own future.

The summit moves beyond traditional game design to focus on commercial survival and growth. The programme includes:

- Pitching for Business: Helping developers sell a business proposition, not just a game concept.
- Founder Lightning Talks: Real-world war stories from Scottish studio leads who have successfully navigated the startup process.
- “Office Hours” Mentorship: A drop-in zone where senior veterans and business advisors provide 1-on-1 career and startup guidance.
A Call for Industry Mentors & Partners
With 60% of tickets already booked, SGN is also issuing a final call for established studio heads and experts in funding, finance, and market validation to join the afternoon Office Hours and workshops.
“This is about more than just Scotland; it’s about the resilience of the UK games ecosystem,” Baglow continues. “We have the talent. Now we need to provide the professional infrastructure to ensure the next generation of studios are built on solid foundations.”

Not unexpected, given the state of the sector and the recent cancelled promotion round, but just argh. I need a new career.

UCU members at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) will begin the first of six days of strikes tomorrow over £4million cuts, including £3 million from the staffing budget meaning that up to 44 roles are being made redundant.
The job losses include staff working in teaching, research, management and administration, and in ensuring academic quality, as well as essential services like student support.

A ballot for strike action opens this Friday at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in a dispute over job cuts and compulsory redundancies.
In an e-mail to all staff the university confirmed plans for drastic cuts to the staff budget of £3million which will lead to significant job losses and includes compulsory redundancies. The university also announced a further £1million cut in the non-staff budget.

UCU has slammed the University of Huddersfield for large-scale redundancy proposals that could see dozens of staff lose their jobs by the end of September. Announcing the cuts just before the summer leave period makes meaningful consultation practically impossible.
This would be the fifth round of redundancies forced through in the past four years, and the third year in a row the arts and humanities department has been cut.
