  1. Quick summary of that ABC piece on crashing Chinese student numbers: Australian universities are pulling the exact same move Australian manufacturing did years ago — they're offshoring.
For decades the unis built a fat revenue model shipping full-fee international students here at $50k–$60k a pop. Now that pipeline is drying up fast, they're rushing to set up joint programs, transnational degrees and offshore campuses across Asia. Same product, delivered cheaper and closer to the customer, with fewer costs onshore.
It's the classic neoliberal playbook: when the easy profits at home dry up, chase them wherever labour and overheads are lower. The cash cow that subsidised the whole sector is on life support, just like the factories before it. Local jobs, wages, and the character of our campuses pay the price.

  2. CBA is cutting 300 more Australian jobs while talking about upskilling workers. But here is what they are not telling you.
While handing out redundancies here, they are on a massive hiring spree in Bangalore with staff numbers up 21 percent to nearly 6,800. Right now, job ads in India are openly seeking people to do the work being cut in Sydney, including a senior finance analyst role to transition work from the Australian team.
The Finance Sector Union caught them running 30 online job ads for India roles with the same titles as the ones being axed here. This is a pattern, not a coincidence.
Meanwhile, they just pocketed a record 10.25 billion dollars in profit.
Upskilling is not a worker strategy. It is a PR shield for offshoring while the profits pile up.

  5. Europe offshoring migration camps

Albania became the first EU candidate to sign a Frontex agreement in 2019. The EU membership criteria require EU candidates to show full alignment with the EU’s security, defence and foreign policies before joining the EU. This includes working closely with Frontex, the EU border force agency, to manage migration flows. So Frontex became operational in all EU candidate nations in 2022.

  6. Finally got a car insurance policy: all done on computer with Allstate, whose chat box is run by Indians. At least they don't call up their customers and bully them with multiple swear words, which is more than I can say for Americans these days...

  7. #Harris wrapped up her speech by attacking the #economic policies #Trump announced yesterday, saying many of them were rehashes of policies he proposed in 2016, but did not execute as president.

“On Trump’s watch, #offshoring went up & #manufacturing jobs went down across our country & across our #economy. All told, almost 200k manufacturing #jobs were lost during his presidency, starting BEFORE the pandemic hit, making Trump one of the biggest losers ever on manufacturing.”

  8. Delphine Mercier @cnrs :

"The #globalisation of the #economy cannot be reduced to #offshoring, it also translates into the coexistence of different #legal regimes within the same territory. …[the] contribution to the local economy remain extremely low [and there is] the development of a parallel and #informalEconomy around #storage spaces. It is just one small step from a #freeZone to a grey area."

  9. We've had #offshoring... then #reshoring (the return of functions previously offshored) & now we have 'friendshoring' - the location of #supplychain nodes in politically friendly countries (allies).

As firms try to shift supply chains (or at least diversify them) to minimise geopolitical #risk we can expect to see the reinforcement of economic blocs in parallel to alliance-formations.

Whether this will raise costs (as European Central Bank warns) & (re)stoke #inflation remains to be seen

  10. CW: Long thread/3

The paper sent seismic shocks through both legal and economic circles, and goosed the #NeoBrandeisian movement (sneeringly dismissed as "#HipsterAntitrust"). This movement is a rebuke to #Reaganomics, with its celebration of #monopolies, #TrickleDown, #offshoring, corporate dark money, revolving-door #RegulatoryCapture, and companies that are simultaneously #TooBigToFail and #TooBigToJail.

  15. #AI #GenerativeAI #Outsourcing #OffShoring #Automation: "Since the blockbuster launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, future-of-work pontificators, AI ethicists, and Silicon Valley developers have been fiercely debating how generative AI will impact the way we work. Some six months later, one global labor force is at the frontline of the generative AI revolution: offshore outsourced workers.

These include workers hired per commission or on a contractual basis, such as freelance copywriters, artists, and software developers, as well as more formal offshore workforces like customer service agents. As generative AI tools present a new model for cost cutting, pressure is quickly mounting for these outsourced workers to adapt or risk losing work.

Rest of World spoke to outsourced workers across different industries and regions, including call center operators in Manila, programmers in Lahore, and designers in Cairo. Many said they are already seeing generative AI change the demand for their work and the stability of their income. But while some brace for layoffs or diminishing commissions, others have embraced generative AI tools in an effort to keep ahead of the curve. If generative AI represents a tectonic shift in the way we work, offshore outsourced workers are at the fault lines."

  16. Indonesia is opening many new coal-burning power stations to power smelters for nickel that will doubtless go into batteries for our electric cars.

    It’s the apotheosis of #offshoring.

  17. A reminder for those celebrating the rise of #workingfromhome

If you can do your job from anywhere, someone for anywhere can do your job!.

#capitalism has a long history of finding cheap(er) labour & working from home has merely opened up the middle-class to the pressures the working class has been subjected to over decades of #globalisation

The globalised 'efficiency' of such moves has had & continues to have major local consequences.

Even for information workers, #offshoring is a thing!
