  2. A blight that has bedeviled Kinloch for seven years is finally shrinking. Over the past week, workers have begun gnawing at a 6-acre mountain of shingles and other solid waste.

It wasn't always like this. Two derelict buildings on the site began as schools: Kennedy Junior High and Kinloch Senior High. Later they served as City Hall and a community center.

  10. Another dialogue started, another opportunity to improve things in the local community.

It started with this post - see first graphic

Which made me remember our local news reporting - 2nd graphic...which probably is also reported in your local paper, yes?

I asked our editor about this practice/policy - 3rd graphic

Will things improve with regard to this local reporting? That is a definite maybe. (If this dialogue had not started, then I can confidently say that nothing would change.)

I'll follow up on this the next time I meet our local editor for green chile cheeseburgers.

Thank you @algernon for sparking a dialogue!

  11. Companies tied to investor Joey Chianese, of Virginia, have bought 150+ homes at dirt-cheap prices from the poorest neighborhoods of St. Louis.

He then sells the properties using a model like rent-to-own, which yields investors a steady cash stream with little to no responsibility, and leaves buyers without the protections afforded by mortgages or landlord-tenant laws.

  12. Who else is embarrassed for #WTHR? The #CircleOfLights broadcast is so bad. Just as the lights were about to be turned on, they went to a Riley Children’s Hospital commercial not once, but TWICE, and missed the lights being turned on. The overall production value was way down from past years.

Shame on #Tegna. #LocalJournalism deserves better than all the cuts and layoffs.

  15. Rents across the St. Louis region are soaring, but nowhere more so than in the neighborhoods that have become targets of real estate investors.

Four of the ZIP codes with the top increases in rent since 2023 are in a swath of North County from the airport to the Mississippi.

  16. New data obtained by the Post-Dispatch indicates hundreds of the buildings mangled by the May 16 tornado in St. Louis were likely vacant before the storm even hit.

That could hobble the city's efforts to rebuild the neighborhoods hit hardest by the storm.

  23. I've been using YouTube to watch local news from around the #USA. I think this video of a town hall meeting of farmers in Arkansas is about as telling as anything I've seen.

We can all laugh and make leopard/face jokes (I'll cop to laughing at the beginning of the video), but I think there's a rare opening to actually communicate with these people.

Democrats (hopefully NEW democrats) should get down there post-haste.
