  1. CW: Jason Arday

Jason Arday. I know very little about the case and am not in possession of any special facts. But it seems clear that this young scholar felt the need to make himself bigger than he was, a hero rather than a solid worker. There is unending pressure to impress and self-aggrandise in all parts of life, including academia. I don't experience any pleasure in seeing this young man "found out". His soul must be shaking. I am however glad that the case gives all of us a chance to reflect on why we are scholars and teachers, what values we want to pass on in our own fields, and on what criteria our insitutions promote and support individual scholars. Primarily I feel deeply, deeply sad that this young man's life was overtaken by the urge to be someone else. There's an element of that in everyone, let us find ways of making it unnecessary.

"...; but the fellow do it in kindness, and is one I am beholden to."

And those are the things that matter, Sam, you are so right. The kindness, not the oddness of their action toward you.

  3. Greetings, fellow Fedizens. Winter solstice has passed and the days are getting longer, hooray. (Those of us in the Southern half, your time will come.)

Another hour, and the first slightly longer day will begin in my part of the world. The sky is already brightening, and the birds in the garden are busy announcing the new day.

This is as good a day as any to celebrate Joan Mastodon's special ambassodor in the Arctic, the wonderful @NunavutBirder. He too has reason to rejoice: for him up in #Nunavut, it's only six weeks until the sun will rise again, ending the long unbroken arctic winter night:

May 2026 be the year where the ever extending political and cultural darkness begins to recede.

"An unexpected and much appreciated bridge between people of goodwill."

Very well put! The Fedi in one word. And you've got wise grandchildren.

My whippet Castorp says hello to your Summer.

  5. Hold your position, make tactical retreats if necessary, but keep the core of truth alive.

The tide is moving against us, in so many dimensions. Covid brought upon us a new wave of eugenicism; the far right is on the rise everywhere; genAI threatens our mental autonomy. The US constitional arrangement disintegrates. Big Business has taken over the UK Labour government. The horrors of the Middle East.

All of these developments amplify each other. There is no way for us to succeed against this powerful confluence of developments just right now. Things will get worse still.

But the tide will turn, eventually.

Our task is to maintain islands of integrity, wherever we can. To maintain a living memory of what it means to speak the truth, to be kind, to be authentic, to recognise facts, to listen.

That will not always be possible, but try we must.

  6. John Harris on the dangerous and anachronistic views on disability that are so deeply entrenched in western culture.

Virginia Woolf, John M Keynes, so many others whom we admire for their work: they all were part of that dark trait in our history.

The Babka instance is a source of strength for all of us who wish to protect free discourse on Fedi and who believe in kindness and the human spirit. Thank you, Serge, for your work in your instance. It is invaluable, not just for your members. The poison of antisemitism is flooding through western societies, we will fight it, Jews and non-Jews together, for the sake of free engagement between all humans.

Chocolate and dogs, indeed. Our whippet's eagerness to eat interesting things has caused him (and us) all sorts of trouble, but thankfully thus far we've managed to keep the chocs away from him. May it stay that way!

And your final advice is spot on: "Never turn down a blessing. Most people mean well, and we're all imperfect." It shines through the surrealism and the acid of all your wonderful posts. So glad you are here on Mastodon.

  9. @gemelliz

Appeals to authorities at this stage are in vain. #Masking at work, avoiding crowded places, air filters at home: I keep taking these measures because they protect me and my family.

Those around me are unlikely to join me now. But my actions serve as quiet public reminder of the reality of #covid.

The discourse of denial will break eventually, we cannot control how and when. This is not the time to convince others. We speak up to keep the flame alive.

  10. #Introduction

[Re-writing my earlier introduction post, now closer to Mastodon conventions.]

Greetings. Starting a presence here on mastodon, just in case the other place collapses.

My posts on twitter are under @in_hail_or_rain. I will not cross-post between platforms but instead build up new dialogue here.

I am a UK academic, posting freely on #UKpolitics, #covid, #pedagogy, #art. I hope you don't mind if I stay anonymous, no ill intentions. My motto is #kindnesswillprevail.
