I've used a transparent smoke colored glass to make these beads, along with champagne and white overlaid with dark purple that appears black in all but bright natural light, and some opaque earth tones. Baking soda can be used to create a texture to glass beads or other glass objects. Far left, the only effect is blending of two colors around the equator of the bead, which retains it's shine. Further right, the blending is more thorough, with a "metallic" surface appearance. Something new in my Etsy shop. I used 3 types of blue to make the beads for this piece: both dark and light opaque marbled blue and transparent electric blue. It may never be pretty, but it's functional. I'm up and running in my new studio, the old metal-roofed cinder block building on the property. I've run power 150 feet to the structure, cleared it of debris, etc. and am set up with a hot head. Today I'm assembling components for earrings. Overthinking a project leads to inertia. Rather than becoming frustrated, it's best to just clear the mind, pick up some glass, any glass, fire up the torch and make something.
