From the 1st Century BCE to 4th Century CE, Roman glass artisans imitated luxury objects made from polished banded agate. Especially popular were conical glass beads displaying the same white and brown banding.

To recreate these, I used transparent topaz glass and off-white opaque, plus biconical beads in red and adobe to go with them, and a brass pendant at the center -- think Roman Empire meets Southwestern style!

For this new 20-inch necklace, I used 3 different shades of transparent blue glass, covering each in a thin layer of powdered blue enamel while the glass was white-hot. The focal pendant features a thin sheet of 24-carat gold leaf.
