My institution is having exactly one week of classes after Thanksgiving break, then right to finals.
That's just asking for half the class to show and honestly, I can't blame them. If I'm an overworked, always-stressed, underpaid student traveling all the way home for the holiday, and many/all of my finals can be done remotely, why would I come back for the last week of class unless I absolutely have to?

I'm not perfect with my grading turnaround timelines, so I don't expect perfection on due dates as long as students *communicate* with me and ask for time.
In the "real world" timelines shift, things get reprioritized, and stuff happens. I want students to get practice in asking for help, and I'd rather have quality work and clear communication than something rushed.
I do have to balance my own workload though. It's tricky.

Teaching with #Canvas "pro" tip. Next time around, I will show students during class time where to find my feedback on their written work. I had put localized feedback in their work, but major substantive comments in "comments for this attempt." I learned in a very-late-in-the-semester office hour that a student didn't see these substantive comments in their mobile devices without an additional click. π§ #pedagogy #higheredteaching
