Just received my Spring course evaluations for a seminar on "Computer & Information Ethics" which was cross-listed between #ComputerScience #Informatics #Anthropology and #Sociology - I was a bit concerned 5mo ago when I started because of how the world is right now and how anti-ethics in tech are being sold & shoved down people's throats. How would students respond to a "tech" class on human rights, cross-cultural expressions of safety, deeply critical deconstructions of the way money and political power influence our tools?I should have had more faith.
The kids are alright.
1: "I took an "equivalent" course at another university and they didn't actually teach me anything about ethics. I actually feel like this course challenged me to hold myself to a little bit higher of a standard as I prepare to enter the workforce."
2. "He designed a spectacular, challenging, and well prepared course. Dr. Wells is one of the few teachers I've had where I can't complain about anything they have done. Genuinely give this guy a medal or something."
3. "It felt like the class was more about actually learning and thinking critically and less on harsh grading, which I enjoyed. I found myself even talking to friends and family about the topics I learned and I also spent time researching and learning more about certain topics because I felt as if I was able to enjoy the class and not specifically worry about passing a test."

Has anyone done a randomized and/or controlled version of this pre- versus post- test of an automatic order set change protocol?

Highly scalable, if a health system is willing to experiment!

I am starting to talk about UXD from an HCI perspective as PIE: Paradigmatic Interaction Experience, or, individually, interaction experience paradigms.
I don't have the clout to coin a term and expect anyone to use it, but fuck it. #UXD is too much about two-dimensional widgets. #HCI is too broadly about #informatics in #sociology.
WTF am I talking about?
Epubs and PDFs are consumed in the same paradigm.
Filesystem navigation is a paradigm, and you know what experience to expect during that. -

Hello #Fediverse! Looks like I’m an #introduction away from joining the conversation so here goes!
I lead data teams for a healthcare system in New Mexico. My healthcare path started in acute care nursing before moving into #Informatics. These days, I’m deep into #Python, #Airflow, and #LLMs. I also love #Soccer (#Football), #Sailing, and doing anything my kids let me tag along for.
Looking to connect on #HealthIT, #DataEngineering, and #DataScience or just chat about other interests.

A well researched and written book addressing a topic (named by the title) critically important to explore at the dawning of the age of #AI.
I especially appreciated how Brooks capped it with a chapter on wisdom, and what is a "community of truth." Particularly inspiring from my #HCI and #informatics -oriented mind.
I hope to relay some of the contents of this book to my children, if I can.

The anti-Free aspects of the design of the "app" paradigm are:
Ⓐ Your screen space:
A company controls those pixels. The #desktopMetaphor is the root of this #enshittifiability, with "windows" defining a portal between your attention and the informatic space unilaterally controlled by the developer.
An alternative is how GNU and the shell work, where the human invokes the function, which humbly takes no more time than necessary and exits, leaving just what was requested.

Seeking advice. I frequently teach a #HigherEd #AcademicChatter class in the US on Social Informatics which includes a module on #OpenGovernment and #CivicTech to give students an overview of the sector (international, national, state/provincial, local) as a public good, driver of economic health, and locus for potential careers. Obviously there have been changes in US federal policies with deleterious trends in the past year, and I have those covered.
I am seeking help covering emerging #DigitalSovereignty trends. Especially those which involve non-US entities leaving or planning departures from US-based tech because of any combination of tariff demands, copyright/surveillance policies, or other concerns about corporate and/or political power. I already cover the UK transition to Open Document Format in 2014. So I'm not presenting this as something new, but the speed and urgency is definitely picking up (see example links of EU moves to promote FOSS alternatives to US tech, France dropping Teams and Zoom).
1. Examples and links are definitely welcome
2. Thoughts from folks about how to explain this emergent scenario to US-based #ComputerScience and #Informatics and other college students, and its impacts on their futures. Thoughts from outside and inside the US are very welcome.
3. Same as no.2 but where do you see this trend in 5 years? 10 years?
You read this far? Thank you! Wow!

New article on promoting the human in an AI world.
"This essay uses cyborg anthropology to model interactions between humans and artificial intelligence (ai) and highlights potential strengths and weaknesses of ai regarding learning and innovation. Informed by Haraway’s emphases on inequalities, we recognize ai is neither a separate nor superior form of intelligence, but a tool that augments human agency. Current examples of ai implementation in the civic, domestic, labor, and educational domains expose the potential of ai for biases and oppression as a human construct that reflects and affects the sociocultural and ethical values of its creators and users. These examples inform practical and ethical considerations for the development and use of ai in the future, including structured human-ai collaboration, promotion of human-ai literacy, respect for human dignity and rights, and addressing inherent biases and inequalities."
Wells, Joshua, and James M. Vanderveen. 2026. “ An Anthropological Understanding of Artificial Intelligence Transformations in Civic and Domestic Life, Labor, and Higher Education Through the Cybernetic Organism (Cyborg) Concept”. Holiday reading: *Degrees of Freedom: On Robotics and Social Justice* by Tom Williams. "Why the field of robotics tends to reinforce white patriarchal systems of power—and how roboticists can work to change these systems. In Degrees of Freedom, Tom Williams explores critical questions at the intersection of robotics and social justice. He considers the ways in which roboticists design their robots’ appearance, how robots think and act, how robots perceive people, and the domains into which robots are deployed. The book highlights not only the ways roboticists tend to reinforce white patriarchal power structures but also how roboticists might instead subvert those power structures by applying theories and methods from a diverse range of fields. Drawing on computer science; history and politics; law, criminology, and sociology; feminist, ethnic, and Black studies; literary and media studies; and social, moral, and cognitive psychology, the book connects questions of robot design with larger abolitionist movements by presenting a vision for a more socially just future of robotics."

We are excited to announce Meet the Editors with ASIS&T on April 17 at 6 PM PT. Come chat with us and ARCHEOTA!
Getting published for the first time can seem overwhelming, particularly for new student researchers. This panel aims to help students understand the process from submission to final acceptance that papers undergo. Editors will share information about their publications and provide insight into how best to succeed in publishing with them. We encourage you to bring your questions or submit them to us before the event. This event will be recorded.
