@newscientist wrote a fascinating article about our latest paper, where we create touch sensations in the front of the user's hand, without covering it up! Work by PhD student Yudai Tanaka, together w/ former intern Andy Kong & master student Alan Shen! You can read it here: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2372921-smart-glove-enhances-your-sense-of-touch-in-virtual-reality/
Or watch the accompanying video they made: https://youtu.be/2yIZcPrgoe0 #chi2023

Hi #hci folks! We’re curious - what is your opinion of research synthesis and specifically systematic reviews within HCI? Let us know what you think these can look like or can result in > here via this link: https://bit.ly/3oBteKA We’ll summarise the results towards the end of the month. #chi2023 #chi2024 #acmchi

Now that I've settled, some thoughts on my time this year at #CHI2023
- I had a great time at the workshop I co-organized on intelligent and interactive writing assistants. (Check out our website! https://in2writing.glitch.me/) I think what made it great was the mix of participants. We tried hard to recruit from HCI, NLP, as well as linguistics, english, rhetoric. We had people who worked on accessibility, creativity, non-native speakers. Diversity is great. We all learned a lot.

BTW, my collection of weird HCI papers still needs a good entry from #chi2023 😉 Suggestions welcome! (of course also from other venues, if you've got something)

Researchers used comics to explore how community-centered AI design can include both the people experiencing #homelessness and the frontline workers who use #AI to help them. This work bridges the gaps between the technical & social of computer science, and between researchers & impacted communities.
Congrats to the team on a #CHI2023 Best Paper award: #cmuhcii's Tzu-Sheng Kuo, Hong Shen, Jason Hong, Ken Holstein and Haiyi Zhu; and Nev Jones of Pitt Social Work.

Back from #chi2023, spent a whole morning reading through updates in Ben Shneiderman's Human-Centered AI Google group updates. Human agency & control, metaphors of AI teammates v.s. supertools, many great ideas and can't recommend more! Sign up here: https://groups.google.com/g/human-centered-ai/

exciting to see this #openaccess publication venue for #datavis and #hci research:
The Journal of Visualization and Interaction
https://www.journalovi.orggood timing, too! a week after #chi2023 and a few days before #ieeevis reviews are due, the ambitions spelled out in the announcement read like a breeze of fresh air:
- Open by default
- Open review process
- Knowledge over noveltyof course this will not replace the dinosaurs, but it’s great to have more choice. good luck, @jovi!

human work is essential to making automation and AI work. one important type of humans' role: fix errors - in single outcomes, in the production process, in the fundamental design/conceptualisation of the output.
i made this argument reflecting on empirical work in re-work in car series production, contributing to the #chi2023 ws on hidden human work in the context of #AI https://yanaboeva.xyz/behindthescenesofautomation/ (search for my name to find my own contribution on the page, or read others there!) -

Inspiritation I take with me from the great #generativeAI #chi2023 workshop https://generativeaiandhci.github.io/ (thanks @michael, co-organisers and co-participants!): Creativity could be conceptualised as "I" generate something out of myself, "I" invent; vs. there is sth out there that lets me access ideas/insights/concepts. To which notion does generative AI attach? Our discussions about what it can(not) do?

#CHI2023 is over, but in case you missed any of our papers you can watch all the talks online now! These new four devices represent lots of hard work by PhD students Jas Brooks , Romain Nith (& co-authors), Yudai Tanaka (& co-authors), and former intern Arara Jingu (Alan is posing here with LipIO since Arata is doing his PhD in Germany now!). You can watch me try all four devices here: https://youtu.be/7QBwi8pu0sI and check all the CHI talks in our lab page (https://lab.plopes.org)

A paper on open practices is being published in #CHI2023. But unlike the #OpenScience it promotes, it does not share its data. What could be an excellent discussion of research practices is instead a poor example of scrutinizability. A call for...

Computer science conferences don't send a final decision letter to reviewers or make final decisions visible to them, which I find extremely inconsiderate. #chi2023
